Just curious, but for those of you that give knives as gifts, do you ask for a coin in return?

I do it more as tradition rather than superstition. Just curious if anyone else still does it.

Heh, I forgot about that. About a year ago I gave mom a small framelock as a gift and told her about it, mainly cuz I had just read about it. I'll have to remember it again - Charles

Yes. An old Yorkshirewoman once told me, "Giving a knife as a gift cuts friendship." I always take a shilling (our smallest silver coin).

Gave a knife to a friend many years ago and forgot to get my coin.Have not seen him since.Bad mojo I would say.;)

I don't, but then, I'm the kind of guy who walks under ladders, and lets black cats cross my path.:D.

I think it goes something like this, if you "give" someone a knife it is still "from you" and your responsibility. If he gets cut by the knife you end up having cut him. But if he symbolically "buys" it from you then the knife is no longer your responsibility.

In Korea, they've taken this to the point where giving knives as presents is pretty verboten. But in the case where one is given, money much change hands also.

When Jack Crain made a knife that I designed, I gave him an ancient Roman silver Denarius depicting Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. He really enjoyed the gift and we're still friends, so I guess it worked.
