They local Post Exchange on base has (2) of the original AK 47's with G-10 for $37.09. Brand new in clam shell packaging. Is it worth it? $40 seems like a steal, but how does it compare to the triad version, is it inferior? They also had an all black Swisstool for $60. Yet another steal. Thanks for any help.

The AK 47s are a pretty good deal if you like that model (they are super easy to open but quite heavy if it`s the aluminum scaled model) but I think the Tri Ad lock is stronger.

its a good price and i got a all stainless swiss tool that i got for a gift a few years back its its probably the best multi tool iv ever used

I have both the original and new tri-ad lock AK-47, they are both very tough with very strong locks that you don't have to worry about failing.

I would buy it just for the price but honestly the new AK is a more refined knife and much lighter.

The old AK's were real tanks. 4mm thick stock, full steel liners, a real beast. That price is right if for no other reason than wanting to flip them. The CS collectors are looking for the Ultra Lock knives right now. The lock is plenty strong, but like knifenut says, the newer generation is more ergonomic, lighter and arguably just as tough even without the steel liners.

The AK 1.0 is a much better all-around knife, especially if you need to baton and get really nasty with it. Had one but sold it and now regret it.

The 2.0 while it does meet or beat the 1.0 in several aspects is in my opinion more perfected as a self-defense knife (hollow ground, light, strong)
and that hollow grind wont stand up to the abuse the original ones can. Mine sits in my knife drawer waiting for a SHTF type day.

gotta get that triad lock because you really need something that can take 750 pounds instead of 550 pounds.

Klute, the old ones had a deep hollow grind as well.

Yes, but the 2.0 blade is redesiged, it has less mass and new geometry, i think it's not as strong and the fully curved blade is a sea change as far as cutting action. The old one did have a straight section of blade......and the hollow was less deep?

The new one weighs what 60% ?? of the old? It's a very different knife in my opinion.

I have only handled the new; nice knife with the rounded off g10 edges and the aluminum pommel. I don't remember much regarding the new blade design other than the stock is thinner. The old versions ( I had a g10 version) had remarkably deep hollow grinds, they were very thin at the edge. I never understood why for such an otherwise beastly knife that the grind was so (seemingly) delicate.

Please don't baton a folding knife.
