Hey guys. http://www.coldsteel.com/92cat.html

So is this legal in Canada? Ontario, to be precise. Also, does it keep an edge like a regular steel knife? Can it be sharpened? And if so, how?

Thanks.

Edit: I'd appreciate it if you guys could point me to some other composite knives, too.

I bought one and threw it in the trash. Don't waste your money on it. It does not take or hold any edge at all. The edge is flimsy plastic.

They're basicly (sp?) hard plastic, they won't hold an edge, and aren't good for much except stabbing people. I had one for a while and mostly used it for a letter opener. I think they are legal in Canada, check local law regarding "non-metallic knives". Have fun.

Even as a letter opener, these don't work: the blades are too thick and you damage too much of the envelope contents.

These are generally promotional items... like the CIA Letter Openers that some warehouses were chucking into your box for every order over $20.

As a throwaway, though, you can get really good punch with it. It is quite possible to drive one of these things through solid wood. But it's "use once, throw it away." It's ruined after one use.

Actually, a student of mine *did* manage to sharpen one of these. All he did was take a metal blade, and shave the thing into a toothpick. Except for the handle, it was totally unrecognizable, but it was possible to slice paper cleanly with it. So if anyone wants to buy one of these, and shave away 80% of the blade, you might have something!

I think we still have a couple around that we use for introductory training, but that's it. It'll scratch bad, but not cut.

I won't even bother directing you to other composite knives, because they're all basically like this. A composite handle could be good, but a non-steel blade isn't going to do too much for you.

Yeah, these things are pretty much garbage for defensive use. You could shape it down "shank style" into a point...but you might as well just buy the CS "Delta Dart" they are actually pretty handy for a throwaway Non-Metallic shank. I took a file and flattened out the edges and use it for certain training applications...half speed drills and bag work.
