I was looking for a small FB that I could fit into my front pocket. I found the Cold Steel Pendleton Mini Hunter for about $29. Here’re the specifications from CS:

I got it a few days ago and I’m very pleased. This is a small FB, but still has decent ergos. The VG-1 blade has a nice shape and thickness. It came razor sharp out-of-the box and easily shaved by arm hair. Some jimping on the spine would be a nice add-on. The left side of the blade has the knife’s name and the right has “VG-1 Stainless Japan.”

The handle material is slightly “rubbery” but doesn’t stick to the pocket when drawn. It feels good in the hand, but only has room for a three-fingered grip (your pinky hangs off the end). The lower guard is a nice feature to keep you from assuming a 4 fingered grip and cutting your index finger.

The kydex sheath holds the knife securely. The belt attachment is removable and can be installed for both left and right handed users. The sheathed knife completely conceals in my front pocket and is comfortable. I might try to attach a mini Tec Lok – or just carry it in my front pocket.

I’ve never owned a VG-1 blade, so I don’t know its edge holding properties or the ease of sharpening.

In conclusion, this is a well-executed, small FB that’s fit for EDC and conceals easily. At $29, it’s a bargain IMO.

Good observations.

Thanks!

Thanks for the in-hand shot, that's a much smaller knife than I expected. VG-10 gets a lot of thumbs up around here. I have a Spyderco Centafonte in that steel, holds a good edge.

Thanks Andy. I have big hands, but it is a small FB. Basically the blade size of a Delica, but a shorter, thicker handle.

BTW - the steel is VG1 - not VG-10. I like it so far, but not sharpened it yet.

Ooops. My mind automatically supplied the "0".. ! Wonder how much difference there is?

does anyone have the full-size model? i was thinking of picking up one for use as a small camp knife, but wanted some feedback from actual users before buying it.

I had the same model but I found it too small for my medium-glove sized hand. At that price you might have considered the AG Russell Woodswalker: http://www.agrussell.com/product.asp?pn=AGPRS which is $20 with a leather pocket sheath.

I also owned the larger Pendleton - handle was nice but the blade was ground too thick for my liking and I much preferred the Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V.

I love mine,I keep it in my bug out bag. When spit hits the fan, this is the knife I want with me. But I do take it out for long walks.

VG-1 is roughly equivalent to AUS-10 and is a good high quality stainless, better than AUS-8. They had to do something to upgrade their stainless steel, since "Carbon V" (50100-B "Chrome Vanadium" or 0170-6C) is no longer available, and they are now using VG-1 in its place.

VG-10 is an upgrade to 154CM/ATS34 and is one of my favorite steels.

Almost, but not quite. They brought out VG-1 as an upgrade to their use of AUS-8, specifically for the Cold steel Tanto (which was never made of Carbon V), before Camillus went belly up (before their Carbon V supply completely dried up). SK-5 is predominantly what they've used to replace their Carbon V, not VG-1.

I stand corrected.

I wanted to like this knife. But, even with my smallish hands, the handle feels just a little too short for me. If they lengthened it even by just a half an inch, I'd buy it. Nobody makes a good production 7" OA FB with decent steel (I consider VG-1 decent) for under $50 with sheath that I am aware of. Orion K2 is the only other one that comes to mind.

Agreed - another 1/2 inch on the grip would be nice. Same issue on my BM Mini-Grip folder - the grip is just too short for me.

However, the Mini Pendleton feels better in the hand to me than the Mini Grip and fits in a front pocket nicely. It works for me, but would definitely be better with more room on the grip.

Is there a lanyard hole on this knife? I suppose I could tie something on as an extension.

I helped my neighbor clean a whitetail, and while he used a large Buck skinning knife, I used the little Pendelton. He laughed at me...at first. But he shortly allowed as how that was "one heck of a great knife."

I love this little guy.
