Picked this up at a auction a while ago and was hoping someone could tell me the model and approximate age. OA length is only about 26"-27".

thanks

It's a Hudson Bay pattern, called a cruiser's axe. Collins made good axes, but I'm not a fan of this pattern. It's only good for blazing trees or light chopping. Problem is, there's not enough contact between the wood & the metal so the head is prone to loosening up if you chop too hard with it. The boss bought these all the time for us to use in the woods on the survey crews because they were easy to carry, but they never held up well.

Excellent point! I had never thought of that. The cutting edge would essentially act as a lever against the eye. I used to want one of these...not so much anymore.

I may be wrong not looking for a fight but some times an axe that size is called a marking axe or a sounding axe when logging.

light to carry and use to mark timber to betaken from a wood lot andafter trees are cut down they lumber graders wood hit the end of the log to hear how "sound" the log is, good or punky or doughty wood.

also might be wrong but i thought a cruiser axe was a double bit, but 26 -28 inches long is right as is the hudson bay style head.

Nice big but not to big axe to take along and get the job done.

pat

A lot of times the names are just local names and may be called something else in another part of the country.
