I wanted to turn a Benchmade (806SD2) Combo Edge into a Fully Serrated Edge. Can this be done? Any idea on who does this kind of work? I asked STR, and he said that he didn't.

that sounds like a job for... YOU! take it apart, anneal the blade, file serrations into it, then re-heat treat.

why would you have to re-heat treat it? I would assume that grinding serrations into the blade would be the same as sharpening it over and over again over the years, and not effect the steel quality much.

But I don't have any experience in modding knives, nor do I have any necessary tools! There has got to be someone out there that does this kind of work?

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

I would assume a dremel would do the trick. If you could get a tip that was bullet shaped I think that would work best for creating serrations. But this is all theoretical, I have no idea what I'm talking about. But I guarantee you this is how I would go about it.

for practice, go to the 99c store, They always seem to have a knife or two. practice on those before touching a knife that actually cost more money than can be found under the average sofa cushion.

I suggest calling benchmade and seeing if they'll consider resharpening your knife with full serrations. The factories have special grinding wheels just for this, and if your model was ever available with full serrations they can probably do it.

Nooo, this got moved to another forum. I had originally posted a thread with the same question in this forum, but got zero responses. (Oh well)

Bookworm, to be honest, I think I am way too inexperienced to do any modding. I don't think I will be giving that a try.

yoda, Benchmade did have an older model (800FS) fully serrated, but with a different steel. I guess it wouldn't hurt to just ask.

Thanks for your input guys; still looking for someone who does this kind of blade work.

No, this is the right forum, just most people here don't like serrations.

As I recall from the Maker's forum, one of the easiest ways to create/extend serrations is get a round diamond file of the appropriate diameter, a solid metal rod of the same diameter, and tape them together. Lay the rod in the last serration, and you have your spacing for the next one down pat.

this is the knife? I wont mention the hole in the blade that is similar to a company trademark of one of its competitors...

I think It will be hard to duplicate the factory serrations, also it will change the blade's profile, the belly of this blade is quite attractive IMO.

I posted the same thread in another forum, but it got moved here, so now there are two threads with the same question. (My mistake!)

I generally don't like serrations either. I'm in the boat where it has to be plain edge or fully serrated, no combo. That is why I'm trying to change this combo edge into a fully serrated one. Also, I am way too inexperienced to mod a knife; nor do I have the necessary tools.

Yep, that is the knife. I don't know if this idea is even possible. I wonder if it has ever been done before.

Anything is possible, but adding serrations sounds like a pretty major PITA to me and if you find anyone willing to do it the cost may be prohibitive. It would be much easier to remove the serrations that are already there and end up with a slightly recurved blade shape. I'm personally kind of leery about doing mods on higher end knives. I think if I were you I'd try to sell it and get something more suited to my tastes.

you could grind it i suppose, just be gentle and dont overheat the blade, i would NOT use a dremel, however I would use a small bench grinder with a cut off wheel. or like yoda said call benchmade and see how much they would charge ya to do that.

dvsdve, a chainsaw file, a good clamp an artistic eye and some patience and your there. If you don't want to tackle it send it to me and i'll do it for you. No problem. Nacci.

Chainsaw file , artistic eye :thumbdn:, apparently I don't have either! No way I found someone that does this kind of work, I'm too shocked to believe it! I thought my idea had gone sour. Got a website or pic of previous work?!?

Sounds like you got someone. If you had two of them, perhaps some creative use of a key making machine by a locksmith might work, tracing one serration to the remainder of the blade. The Japanese have these triangular shaped files that they use for their Japanese saws for woodworking and that might work as well (available in various derees of coarseness. Looks more like a regulkar file, but instead of two sides, its an upper triangle and a lower triangle making a diamond with the edges of the file meeting (if that makes sense). You would just file the serrations i with the side edges of the file.

dvsdev, No website. I am a carpenter and mason by trade. I am in the process of building my knife shop and am humbly learning the trade from the ground up. I have never been shy about cutting into a knife. Most of my previous work has been modifying Strider AR's. Here is a link to some of that work. http://photobucket.com/mediadetail/...0193_1.jpg&searchTerm=strider ar&pageOffset=7 Or go to Photobucket and type in ARMODIFICATION. If I think I can make a knife better, I do it, nothing sacred about it. If you want me to do it for you Email me @ jyann0111@sbcglobal.net
