I have been lusting after a Commander for a few days now, and have been reading the old threads. Got me thinking...does the Commander make a suitable user? I mean, I plan on having a REAL edge put on it before carrying it, but will I have to worry about the blade coming open on me, or any other issues that would effect the non "knife wielding warrior"? I know Emerson's reputation, but I really didn't think of the Commander as pure fighter. I mean, I sure the hell wouldn't trust that liner lock with my fingers if I had to thrust it onto something more solid than a pillow.

Just needed some feedback guys, thanks.

Here are my insights into "Commander as a User"

1. Recurved blades are incredible at slicing, cutting.
2. Nice, large comefortable handle (at least for me)
3. Can't ask for a faster opening from a folder !

4. I haven't abused my Commander (ie spine whack test et al), but my liner is solid, as are the ones belonging to my friends. The only exception to this that I have heard is from too much tuff glide - liner just slipped out due to lack of friction. Other than that, I trust it a lot more than any other liner (with the exception of the LAWKS innerlock used by some companies).

On the Downside...
1. Blade to Handle Ratio - handle could be a little shorter or the blade could be lengthened.
2. Lack of a true double grind. This is a serious problem when slicing, especially since the grind is on the left side of the blade. It also makes the edge profile thicker and less adept at slicing.

All in all, a great knife.

"I am not, really."

No problems with the liner on my Commander. I agree that the recurve is excellent for slashing, but you can't THRUST with the damn thing! (ducking as Don swings at me)
