Commander good for self defense?

Comparing the AFCK and Commander blade styles it appears that the AFCK is a much more effective weapon than the Commander. The blunt nose of the Commander is much more heavy but by appearances alone does not look like it would pierce or penetrate very well. I have been carrying the AFCK for years prior to the Commander. Can you guys enlighten me as to my doubts? Are my doubts well founded? Am I correct is assuming this or am I missing something here?

I posted this some time ago on the same topic, and I believe it to be the truth:

The common screwdriver has basically *owned* the #2 spot in the edged weapons category for homicides in this country for years. Heavy duty shears have also been used for many years in homicides. These are two powerful thrusting weapons. They have no real cutting ability, just as the icepick is deadly with the same lack of a slashing ability.

When you consider the fact that every ounce of your arm, shoulder and at times, the power of your hips and legs will be focused on a point, the Commander's ability to thrust becomes rather stellar, doesn't it? There is a razor-sharp edge there as well on the forefront that actually forms the point of the Commander. This is also something shears and screwdrivers lack.

Now, it then becomes, what thrusts easier, however, "easier" does not necessarily "compute" with me in the street. They're all going in.

Commanderfan,

You've hit upon one of Don and my's largest "pet Peeves"

I've seen all manner of stab and puncture wounds. From scissors, to pens, to Swiss Army Knives, ect. I was pretty impressed with an accidental impalement recently. An intoxicated Golfer was thrown clear from a cart and landed on the head of his putter. (That'll bring a tear to your eye)

For the most part, the human body is fairly soft and easily punctured. Trust me here, the sharpened point of any knife will penetrate with even minor force applied.

Try this test at home. Have your significant other step on the top of your bare foot with a sneaker on. Probably uncomfortable at best. Now have her put on her best pair of six inched, stiletto heels and put her full weight onto the top of your foot.

If your still not convinced, simply drop your Commander from the height of about three foot onto the top of bare foot.

Get the point.

Leave it to John to bring Stiletto Heels into the fray, disguised as knife content.

You are a bad, bad man John Hollister.

"One might only have 50 or 60 foot pounds of energy behind a stroke, but, when concentrated on the needle point of a blade, it literally adds up to an astronomical amount of pounds [PSI] Per Square Inch."
~Bob Engnath

It all goes back to what is easier. As John said, they all will thrust and do so effectively.

All of this is said with the caveat that some blades will penetrate almost effortlessly. It all depends on the specific design of the blade.

However, I don't think it is going to be a concern with the Commander at all.

Hey, this reminds me, where IS my AFCK? I don't recall seeing it since I started carrying my Commander. (I now carry two Commanders!)

As far as thrusting ability goes, to "drive the point home" so to speak, I've demonstrated in the past, how a Rapier blade blunted and rounded so that the tip is actually a 1/4 inch wide surface will easily slide all the way through an uncooked ham quarter with almost no effort at all. I have fulll confidence that it will do the same to "other" meats.

John,
Uhm... you mean some women actually WALK in stiletto heels?

What a concept!

John, I have already taken you up on your suggestion not that long ago. I accidently dropped a 3" paring knife while in the kitchen barefoot. It landed point first into my toe (deflected a little by bone). I got the point.

What I like best about the Commander is the handle design which IMO is one of the best designs to land in my hand. It gives a very sturdy grip without the possiblity of my hand slipping up onto the blade.
I also love the wave. The knive deploys so quickly it is amazing. It is so simple yet effective. After comparing the blades I was somewhat skeptical to it's effectiveness in situations other than utility. The point on the AFCK is much more delicate. I notice that the Commander is much thicker and more robust and appears less likely to bend or break. I was originally thinking about the possiblity of the blade tips to penetrate heavy clothing.

Pick the right tool for the job. I used to work exclusively out of reverse grip, and usually with a huge Strider tanto. I was looking for big, deep penetration. When I started to train more with folders, I found that they tend to work better for slashing and either de-fanging, or cutting the inside of joints to immoblize an opponent. How deep are you really going to penetrate with a 3-4" folder. I have found that I like the Commander for very rapid deployment, and I use it to slash and immobilise in saber grip. I tend to use the tanto bladed knives (Sofck, CQC-5-7) in reverse grip, and am looking for penetration. The CQC-8 is my favorite because it works well for everything (I can hardly wait for my waved one to arrive some day). I have been working on some pretty neat stuff with the P-Sark, and CQC-9 for LE work. I personally gear my training around very simple, dynamic techniques that I don't have to think about under stress. I use specific tools for the mission at hand. With that said-I carry a Commander more than any other knife.

Is that with or without stockings?

You know I prefer my women in stiletto heels and nothing else. But that is just me .
