Common sense prevails!

As many of you know, I work at a Government facility. Since 9/11, we have been under a strict rule as far as knives(none) and we actually have to walk through metal detectors and get wanded, the whole works. There is a sign directly in front of the doors that says, "No knives, guns, fingernail clippers, etc..."

I was coming in this morning, and noticed a different sign. The new sign says, "Nobody may enter with a knife that has a blade longer than 3"." Evidently, somebody used a little common sense and figured out that the pocketknife or box cutter didnt hijack any airplane. It took a sicko to do the horrible stuff that happened on 9/11.

Upon seeing this new sign, I immediately went back to my truck and got my Hen & Rooster stag medium whittler. I forgot how good it feels to actually carry a knife to my desk!

Congratulations Danbo!

Nice to hear that reasonable policies DO exist! :)

Thanks for sharing,

Matthew

Cheers Dando, great to hear someone thinking with their head instead of their you know what! LOL hehe

Common sense in a government facility? Good Lord, don't let this get out, you're going to get someone in trouble!

(I wish I was kidding)

I am pleased to hear that someone came to their senses at YOUR office. Here in Chicago we still cannot bring in anything. Although I must admit to "accidently" bringing in a Spyderco Ladybug.
I do miss carrying my usual EDC. Maybe some day we shall all get over our paranoia.

The way you worded that Danbo reminds me of a Far Side cartoon I saw once showing a bumper sticker on the back of a UFO that read:

RAY GUNS DON'T KILL ZORBIANS
ZORBIANS KILL ZORBIANS

Great to hear that someone is having some more common sense.
I wish some lawmakers in Canada are like that too.

I hope we start hearing more and more stories like this...gives me a little bit of hope (not much, but a little).

...glad to hear it and slightly surprised.
The only problem with common sense is that it's no so common.;)

Well, this morning I put my Hen & Rooster in the tray before going through the detector, and the guard looks at it and then decides to measure the blade. No problem, it is well under the 3" limit. Another guard sees what is going on and says that they are going to change the sign again. The new sign will only allow blades up to 2.5" long. I'm still ok with the Hen & Rooster though, but just barely. Still, it limits my options. Oh well, it's better than nothing.

Danbo I'm in a government building in D.C. and we've been doing the metal detector thing for several years now. What irritates me is the inconsistency among the guards. I've gotten to know a couple of them fairly welland I'm not ussually hassled. I carry a SAK Explorer in a fanny pack and a Leatherman Wave and Minimag in a clip on pouch that now has to be run through the x-ray machine. One day a guard was hassling me about the SAK and a sergeant comes uo and says under 3" is O.K. Another time aguard was hassling me over the Leatherman after letting some OUTSIDE contractor come in with a a whole bucket full of tools! Also the machines are very inconsistent. Yesterday I came in the front door in the morning, unloaded and breezed through no beeps. After lunch I had to go to the bank accross the street and I came in the back door. After I took out everything including my wallet it was still beeping! The guard wanded me up, down all around including up the inside of both legs to my crotch. If she had been younger and better looking I probably would have liked it. It really irritates me to be treated like a criminal in my own building! I've only been working here 24 years.

And what is up with the stupid change in the blade length? A whole 1/2 inch more makes you a psycho killer or something?

I feel so sorry for you guys

Last week i walked into my chefs bureau,
said: "Hello Mr.XXX i have to show you somthing"
then i brought my new Cold Steel OSS up from under my arm

Guess what he said ?

"WOW nice knife let me see how you carry it under your jacket,
upside down?"

OK i knew this bevore, he bought some knives from me earlier :D

I don't see how you guys can work in a place that won't let you carry knives.:) I had to fly to south Texas last week for 4 days and I about went nuts not having my cheap Old Timer 3 blade folder in my pocket. I've been carrying it for probably 10 years. I felt naked. Like when I forget my watch, only worse.

Danbo, glad you can carry something with you again. I understand that in the aftermath of 9/11 governments felt they had to do something, but I do not think any LEO can really believe that we have made America safe from terrorists by taking away SAKs, whittlers, and Spyderco Ladybugs. Once again, hurray for common sense.

==================================

Huh? Why couldn't you bring the knife? I understand you can't carry 'em on the plane, but just stowing it in your checked baggage solves that problem.

If you don't want to check baggage and it's a planned trip, use Express Mail to send one of your spare knives to the hotel. Call the hotel and tell them you have a package coming. Mail it back home when you leave. We all have spare knives.

Danbo,
Good to hear the rules at your placeof work changed for the better, even if only a little.

Hhhmmmm....let's see, if I had to choose a knife that couldn't be bigger than 3" which would it be? I'd definetely choose a Fred Perrin or better one of the design copies like the Emerson La Griff or my CRKT Bear Claw. Best design for a small knife. Feels bigger than it is.

U.S. Code specifically exempts any knife with a blade length of under 2.5" from the weapons definition. Although longer blades are not illegal per se your facility is erring on the side of caution. (I'm a federal employee but we don't have metal detectors yet and the culture here is probably a little different.)
