Consistant coating on the black oxide blades?

Hey guys,

Hope everyone is well and enjoying the holiday season!

I just received my first two customs from Buck and have a question about the black oxide coating I had them put on. I gifted one blade to my father so do not have it with me to compare, but on the one I kept the coating is not even across the entire blade (on both sides). You can see in the pic below what I'm talking about. Is this generally the case? I've seen a lot of pics of alaskin guides and don't ever recall seeing this. I've wiped the blade down with a damp cloth a few times and it does remove a tiny bit of black residue but not the darker spots. I'm not all that concernd about it I guess as these were both bought to EDC and be primary knives/users so the blades will get marked up over time anyhow. Just curious if this is normal? Also they didnt coat the top of edge of the blade, the coating on that bit only starts above the thumb notch, not sure if it was missed or?

Looks like oil to me. Try cleaning the blade with alcohol, lighter fluid, Windex etc.

Can't answer your question, but the custom shop's black oxide coating is different from the Alaskan Guide's titanium aluminum nitride coating.

Thanks for the tip. I just gave that a try and it isnt going anywhere. I'm pretty sure now that it is the coating itself is just heavy in some areas.

Thanks wolfdog! This was just an assumption I had and was obviously in the wrong. Thanks for clearing that up.

I have every confidence that Buck would correct that problem. It is a gorgeous knife that would make a fine 'user'.

The Black oxide coating can vary if we do not get a consistent bead blast under it or also with porosity changes in the material (not too common on Steel). Also the coating house has to have a consistent process. Both situations would lead to blotchy blades. We will re-blade it if you like.

The black is missing from the backbone, as the blade and handle are blended after assy thus removing the black from the top of the blade. All 110s with coated blades will be like that. (yes I know you all with come up with an exception). So this by intent, not a mistake.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for the response!

I don't think I'll send her back in for a re-blade as I'm up North (shipping would be a pain/$$$) , after all, it's my new EDC and will me getting marked up daily anyhow, but good to see the option is available!

The second blade I got didn't appear to have this, but I only briefly looked at it before it was wrapped up as a gift. From what I recall both looked good, but had a lot of excess powder that could be wiped off easily so it wasnt until I wiped it clean that I noticed the dark/light spots.

I don't know if I have ever seen that combination in a 110! I really like it! Too cool! Thank you for the picture!!!!!

Thanks! and that picutre does it no justice in anyway. My camera is junk along with my ability to take a proper shot of it. Both the blade and scales are very dark/black in person (with the minor blade thing).

The below pic is how it comes up on Buck's site. And even though my photo doesnt look as nice/close/badass, I can assure you that it is way above and beyond what I expected it to be.
