I need your help

I’ve been thinking about another contest, but am drawing blanks as to how the contest should be set up.

So this amounts to a contest for how the next contest works.

I do have specific goals in mind for this upcoming contest:

1. The primary goal is to attract new customers to John’s knives.
2. I don’t want to alienate John’s current customers.
3. Additional orders for John’s knives

Those of us who own one (or more) of John’s knives know what a great value his knives are. I’m looking for a way to demonstrate that value to those who don’t currently own one of John’s knives. I’m also looking for a way to attract more attention to John’s knives (and orders).

I also figure that the busier we keep John, the less likely he will get himself in trouble.

Just kidding.:)

On a serious note: the broader the customer base John has, the more likely it is that John actually makes money and that provides each of us with a better opportunity to own one (or more) of John’s knives.

There will be a JK knife offered as a prize for the future contest (the contest that will be the result of this contest). That knife will be free (to the winner of that future contest) but the winner may have to pay for the shipping of that knife. That all depends upon how that (future) contest is set up.

I would like to run that (future) contest relatively soon – as in sometime later this month (probably a couple of weeks from now). Because of this, I am hoping that one of you can come up with an idea that will achieve the 3 goals listed above.

I have no specific rules for this particular contest. Please feel free to make multiple suggestions – in fact, the more suggestions, the better.

There may, or may not, be a prize awarded to the winner of this contest. That will depend (entirely) upon the amount of suggestions received and the participation in this contest. (The more suggestions/participation, the more likely I am to find an actual prize for this contest)

In the event that I do decide to award a prize for this contest (beyond announcing a winner) I will make that prize known prior to ending this contest.

I will probably let this contest run for a couple of weeks. This should give everyone a chance to come up with an idea (or two) that would achieve the goals of the next contest.

Thanks in advance for your help. I am looking forward to your suggestions for the next contest.

Worthy goals! I'd like to help but I can see why you had trouble. It's hard to know what will attack other knife lovers, it's so different person to person. I tried my first JK because of his reputation and a design I liked well. So maybe something like the "deign your own knife" contest john runs, best design gets the knife made? I know that would interest me, then again maybe it would conflict with JK's next contest, I don't know. I'll keep thinking.

Good luck, let me know if I can help, I don't know how I could, but I want to.

thanks Tahts

Hi Tahts -

I dunno - I have thought about this - others have offered cash towards a member's first JK.

How about a torture test passaround. :^)

best

how about a "name the new knife design" contest?
or a "design the new knife" contest -- like the one last year that resulted in the "plan 9" blade.
If you're trying to draw in new users, do first & second place prizes -- first place is a knife, 2nd place is 15-20% off the price of anything John makes (as opposed to a fixed savings, which can potentially put him upside down on a small knife) or a tin knife.

I think there should be a hot pepper/hot sauce eating contest. Everybody must videotape themselves eating a large dose of hot sauce/hot peppers then have them do some task like making a figure 4 snare. Quickest or funniest one wins. That is all I could come up with.

Maybe a design contest for a purpose-built knife as in "design a JK combat knife" or "design a JK skinning knife".

Maybe a two part kind of contest where current JK owners compete and pick or are randomly assigned a member who does not yet own a JK. The winner's beneficiary gets his or her first JK and the "regular" wins a discount off their next order. Perhaps the "regular" is allowed to pick their own beneficiary, even outside of BF?

A combination of the two thoughts above?

A photo contest is always fun.

A " design a knife for James" contest?

A "rescue and refurb an old axe or hatchet" contest?

A "best kit" contest where you show your urban, woods, EDC or BOB kit? This would not necessarily have to be based on the cost of the items (like who dropped $200 on their flashlight, maybe the most complete or well thought out or innovative or cost vs benefit, etc

A carving contest (spoon, bowl, walking stick or entrant chosen)

Some of these are kind of recycled or slightly modified versions of things that have been done but I think they would all be fun!

I like the design a knife idea. Especially since my favorite knives; Becker and swamprat do not fulfill my "needs" for an all around work and play knife esp work.

I personally suspect Johns knives will blowup at some point like Busse and others. I'm patiently waiting on my first and waiting to see if john slows down any to get with him about designing a knife.

Something to consider though:

Mike already has the prize knife, so that one will be the prize.

Btw how do I get my JK member secret decoder ring number?:D

Peace
Steve
Future Ewok owner and unknown jk knife model.

Everyone should remember that Mike already has the prize knife, there will not be another one given. I don`t recommend a "Design A Knife" contest, because........

there will be one of those in April for my Fourth Anniversary Knife Contest!!!

how about a photo contest for current owners that has to include one of your blades/axes in each picture entered -- number of entries is based on the number of JK built toys a person has to post up -- no repeats in the pictures.

Here's a couple ideas anyone could participate in.

I know a while back John had a thread that if you could pick any knife, post it and exactly what options you wanted - handle material, pins, liners etc. That thread was a few pages long, and then John had people email the specs. to him and he quoted back a special price. (Might check with John as to how successful that was at receiving orders). Something along those lines with an added photo or knife use or intended use story to be judged or random drawing. Maybe have more than one prize- a percentage off a knife, specific amount of credit or a knife as the prize.

Possibly have a recipe/cooking contest to win a knife. Seems, I see several people mention their knives doing mostly kitchen duties. Not sure of the participation but it would be interesting to see the variety of recipes. You could pick a specific item for the recipes if you wanted (chili, burgers, etc.). Try them out and pick the best one or have a group of judges to try them and decide. Could have photos too.

That "If You Could" thread was popular, goo point KYturkey.

I was thinking about the picture contest idea, I've seen a few themed photo contest which seem to go well, best fire making photo, best cooking/knife photo, best knife with a dog photo, knife in most unusual place etc. Could be fun.

That thread is responsible for finally moving me into action and placing an order.

The "If you Could" thread was very interesting, and I like the fact that it concentrates on John's knives. Hopefully there will be expansions on that general idea.

I'm also quite fond of the idea for a cooking/recipe contest, with photographs/videos of the completed meal. I'd really like to see some suggestions that expand on that idea.

Another idea that I really liked is the thought of a JK owner sponsoring someone who doesn't own a JK. I'm not sure how that would work, but I think the idea has a lot of merit.

I really don't want to do a design contest, as John already has one lined up (besides, I've already purchased the prize knife). I do think the idea is a great one, but I don't want to take anything away from John's upcoming contest.

I'm not sure about offering two prizes; although the idea is a very good one, I am not sure I can really swing the additional expense. If someone chooses to help sponsor the contest - and wishes to offer another prize, that would be something I'm interested in doing.

If somebody can come up with a way to have a contest that includes the following concepts (below) I think that we might have something.

1. Build your own knife - describe the knife in detail (like you would if you were having John make you a custom knife)

2. List a recipe for the item you will make, then post pictures/videos of the completed item. Since some people have trouble posting pictures/videos, I suspect we might want to make posting pictures/videos an encouraged effort, but not absolutely required.

3. If somebody wishes to help sponsor the contest, and is willing to put up an additional prize, I think the idea of a sponsorship is fantastic. We could design it so the sponsored person (the one who doesn't yet own a JK) chooses their prize (free knife or discount on an ordered knife) and their sponsor receives the other prize.

Of course I am still interested in ideas that do not follow any of the above ideas - so keep em' coming!!!

Both of these are good ideas. I really like the recipe/cooking idea, but I would insist that a sample be sent to me for judging!:D

How about something where we come up with designs. And if picked, supply the materials for it to be made at a discounted price. I'd really like to see what John would do with my materials.
