Cool Little Knives

Before this week, I never understood people's fixation on these forums with little knives.

I've been carrying "Tactical Folders" for a little over 10 years now and I've never carried anything with under about a 3.25" blade; I prefer around a 4" blade. I didn't see the point of little 2 or 2.5" blade at all. I like the larger, harder-working, knives that you can really get a handle on that even have some decent defensive capabilities - and I got good and used to them too.

Recently, somehow, I got turned on by the Spydie Salsa and started looking for a deal on one on Ebay. I didn't find one, but I became intrigued by the MeerKat and purchased one. When it arrived I was immediately hooked on this cool little thing!:D It's handy! It does good work and people hardly notice I have it in my hand when I'm using it. I sliced a Croissant with it at a seminar luncheon today and nobody even noticed I even had it in my hand. (Not that I'd care.) I like the wide blade and handle that lets you choke up. Having the blade tip that close to your hand definately has it's advantages, not to mention the power you can put behind a little wide blade like that. Surprise! Little, wide blades like this give you good control and you can really zip through some material with one and even safely work with your hands close together or near someone else if you're preparing something in the kitchen. NOW, I can think of a million things that a little knife like this is actually BETTER at!

Wow! A new knife concept for me! Little, wide knives!
Who would've thunk it?

Of coarse, being the multi-carry sort of guy that I am, I'll probably carry it in ADDITION to an Axis AFCK or CQC-7 or something big and sturdy like that.

Oh, wait, one more thing...
It works REAL NICE for me carrying it in my shirt pocket because all you see is the wire clip and the knife is completely concealed in the pocket. Especially if I'm sitting at a desk because it's easier than pushing my chair out and reaching down to my pocket.

I still don't have a Salsa, but I gotta have one in a pretty blue or green. After that maybe a Lil Temperance and who knows what other ideas I might get from replys to this thread.

This is just me, once again, as I often do, thinking out loud and sharing my thoughts.

Jump in any time!;)

OLD? :(

But...
:barf:

I'm only 31.

What EVER did you mean by THAT?:(

Dude, you're stressing me out!;)

I'm only 24 at heart, really!:p

I like my "shirt pocket knives" which can be as big as a Spyderco Lum Chinese or small as a Benchmade Big Spender or elegant as a CRK Mnandi. As you noticed, it's nice to have a knife that puts its power literally at your fingertips for control and convenience.

Along with these mini-tacticals, I've also been picking up on a few more traditional, also small, slip joints: a LaGuiole and the very similar Texas Toothpick jackknife, a stockman and a new Case hunter (thumbstuds, pocket clip, and lock -- it's a hybrid :) ), and the extraordinary Douk-Douk.

But I really am getting old! :D

I loooove my Meerkat! I bought one in December for opening birthday and Christmas presents (that was my excuse), and I ended up having to buy one for the girlfriend, too.

Unfortunately, the phantom lock was screwing up on me, so it's on its way back to Spyderco for repairs.

After owning literally hundreds (thousands   ) of knives I have finally found the carry routine that works best for me.

My collection has evolved tremendously to reflect this.

I carry a large 3.5" to 4.5" bladed folder clipped in my right pocket, and a small >3" blade loose in my left pocket.

(Of course I still carry my neck knives regularly, but we're talking EDC here)

This method gives me a small folder for light work, cutting fruit at lunch and something I can whip out at work without getting fired. (or slapped with a sexual harassment suit...LOL) But I also have the enjoyment of carrying my big knives.

So for the most part all of my folders are either big or small, I have absolutely nothing in a medium size any more and I'm quite happy with that.

The biggest folder I'll carry loose is my 705 but the ones I carry most are my Mini UDT, GT Mini & BM 773. The GT Mini is one of the coolest most under rated little knives going, it's very comfortable to carry and women think it's "cute" :)

Today it's the Mini UDT and S30V Black Tactical LCC...

I love big folders:) . Lets see my last buys were,4 Navigators,1 Meercat,1 Chive. I guess I like small ones too!!Ok I gave the Chive away, but those Navigators with a wide thick blade of vg 10 and a handle you can grip makes for a great cutter and for $20 a hell of a buy.

Until 9/11 ended carrying knives on planes.:( I never went anywhere without at least one small knife like a Spyderco Ladybug or Jester on my keychain in addition to my Leatherman Micra. THose tiny knives can do far more than big knife folks give them credit for being able to do.

My EDC is almost always 3" or less simply because that's all I need. Lately my two favorite peices are my Obenuaf Mini Model 2 and my Brad Duncan Mini Police Whiplash. Both have neat little s30V blades that are around 2 3/4".

I like small folders too, but with arthritis in my right hand I have trouble opening the smaller "one handers". :(

Smoky Mountain Knifeworks has them for $19.99, eknifeworks.com. I have always gotten good service and quick shipping from them.

I hear ya. I have several small Spydies and like 'em all - two G10 Navigators, a SS Dragonfly, a Micarta Jester, and a Ladybug II. The Jester and LadyBug II are definitely in the next category down in size from the others. Still quite useful and handy though. IMHO, the Jester should be used in product design classes to teach people about ergonomics.

I have my eye on the Mouse and Cricket next.

I also enjoy the small Case knives, such as the Baby Butterbean and Peanut.

Amen Brother! I got a Meerkat by accident and fell in love with it. The ergonomics are fantastic for a little knife (the little blade is "leveraged"), I was also lucky to get it in 440C, it is my edc and I wear it in the watchpocket of my jeans daily. Minor problem with this blade shape is that it is not pointy and has little "stick" to it. As a convert to the "less is more" camp, I am looking forward to the Spyderco Dodo in blue G10 and the Tim Wegner Mouse II in CF.

From one extreme to another huh?? I still prefer large knives, but have some small knives that are favorites:)

It looks like the big one just gave birth to the little one!:D

Like momma dolphin swimming with baby dolphin.:D

You're a nut.;)

The best thing about little knives, is that it's a good way to get into custom fixed blades. Usually little custom or hand made folding knives are not really cheaper than their big brothers, but in fixed blades, the little ones are often a lot cheaper. You can get a good fixed blade handmade or custom with simple materials starting about $150 and for things like damascus, mokume and bone they start about $250. If they are small, many come with sheaths for pocket carry.

Yes, a small Khukri often comes handy, about a 12 inch blade is just fine.

Now seriously, I find a 3 1/2 inch closed stockman large enough for my EDC.
