Cord wrapped izzy in cold weather

I'd like to pick up a small neck knife and want to use it in cold weather if needed. The plain jane all metal on the izzy would be rather cold.

How much insulation do you get by having the handle wrapped in paracord? I put my RMD and SOD outside for an hour when it was -35 and then grabbed them by the handle without gloves on. The Res C warmed up much faster and the exposed tang on the RMD sucked the heat right out of my hands.

Does it compare to wood? Synthetic? In between?

Thanks

If you're talking 550 cord, paracord is pretty much all synthetic... so probably not like wool.

I'd say there isn't too much "insulation", but won't be as cold as bare metal.... you'll have more grip, esp when wet, and/or covered in snow.

At least when you lick it, your tongue won't stick :p

It's not as good as say G-10 or mircata, but it's cheap, and you will find it fun to wrap your Izula's with different colors, or styles >>

I think a naked izula used with gloves would be just fine if you don't want to use paracord

If you are using the Izula as a neck knife, it will be warm from your body when you use it. I EDC my Izula around my neck and I routinely hike in sub-zero conditions (-20, -30 etc.) I have the handles on mine, but paracord should be fine. Conversely, the handle of my RC-3 gets very cold in sub-zero temps because it rides on my belt. Nothing a good pair of gloves won't fix.

That's true it will also depend on your gloves selection too. Where are you going hiking in -20 BM Boy?

I had my Izula up in Sequoia National Park this last week and and it was damn near 5 bellow with the wind chill factor. I have my Izula wrapped in purple paracord and it was much warmer and felt much less cold in hand than my ZT 551 with its Ti slab and G10 construction.
