Could we take a vote to change the parameters of the Community Forum content?

Is there a possibility we could have a vote to change the Community Center so we can allow general conversation on any subject?
It might seem redundant to have a forum where you can discuss any topic when you have topic specific forums but I don't frequent the other forums like I do this one and I think it would be good to have the freedom to discuss anything we want here as long as it's kept pg rated.
I really don't mean to keep the controversy raked up!
I'm asking this because I think it would make this a better forum!
Have a grand weekend folks!
Michael

No, we can't take a vote.

I'll move this thread to Service & Support. It's conceivable that Spark might be willing to give the idea of a forum with no topic and no rules another try, but it hasn't worked out very well in the past.... It would certainly have to be a new forum and not Community Center, though. Community Center is a very successful forum....

Maybe it's time you started. If you have any interest in guns, for instance, you'll find it rewarding to have a look at Gadgets & Gear now and then. It won't hurt you; if you're not interested in flashlights just don't read the flashlight threads. You can usually tell what a thread is about from the title....

I'd be interested to know what Mike is talking about specifically. Don't we kind of already allow general conversations on any subject?

When was the last time a thread was moved out of Community for content?
Mike, post what you like here, no vote required.

.

Stuff gets moved out on a daily basis by Ken Collucci. Read his sticky at the top of the forum, and his comments in the threads he moves.

Yeah, I noticed this too. Community is the thread-movin'est forum in this place. You could post about how you nearly got ran over by a car, and it would be immediately moved to Gadgets and Gear due to CAR content.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Knifebaby! You can use the search function to search out all posts by particular member -- go to advanced search and put in his username with no key words. It shows Marion David Poff's last post was on 5-11. He often lets a month or two go by but he'll be back -- he's a fixture around here.

If the thread turned out to be mostly about whether the car that almost ran you over is a good car to buy, or how to stop it overheating, or what kind of gun rack to accessorize it with, yeah, it would get moved to Gadgets & Gear. It used to be me who did the moving. I think I said it all in There isn't much here that's new

Maybe someday the Gadgets & Gear forum will get so big we'll have to split it up, and the split might be to a gun forum, a car forum, and an other gadgets & gear forum, but I don't see a need for that any time soon.

Well, you know I was exaggerating, but that forum really does get a lot of moved threads. Some of it is because people think it's a catch-all forum, and some of it is because a mod might have an itchy trigger finger.

For instance, I had one moved that had a link to a perfectly clean, G-rated site about a guy who liked to shoot stuff out of his tracheotomy tube. I thought it was weird and kind of funny, and fit the forum's self-stated purpose as a repository for "humor" and "off-topic subjects". Ken moved it to W&C "for obvious reasons", but I still can't figure out what was so Whine & Cheese-y about it. Maybe if they guy was shooting fire out of his keester...

I guess that's one of those things that's so obvious it can't be explained ... that link even offended some of the denizens of Whine & Cheese, IIRC, or maybe they found it in Community Center. Some of the bastids thought it was funny, too, but it's definitely W&C style comedy. Sorry, I can't explain why, it just is.

What's to complain about? You can post just about anything if you put it in the right forum, and if you don't we move it for you. Sheesh, there are places on the net where if you post something inappropriate it gets deleted and you get banned....

I'm gonna have to accept your judgement on that one. The frightening thing is I'm starting to wonder how warped I am that I didn't find it sickening!

I will continue to moderate the Community Forum in the same manner since I started doing it. It is quite simple. Threads which I feel need to be moved to the appropriate forum will get moved. No if's, and's or but's. If I feel that a topic, which started off in Community and has turned into something else, needs to be moved it will be moved. No if's, and's or but's. If you wanna whine and cry about it go ahead, you have that right but the fact will remain that the thread warranted moving. I would like to keep Community PG-13. If you disagree with me then email me and we will work something out. If you wanna bash me or bust my balls, go ahead, I've had worse. I live in a firehouse with 6 other guys for 24 hours. I'm used to it. Some of you are used to the Community Forum being a slop sink for all topics when it wasn't being moderated properly. VG wasn't keeping up with it due to his personal problems and when the cats away the mice will post crazy stuff. No longer. I stepped in because it was a mess in there and I was tired of looking at all the crap that plagued it. It will remain a PG-13, gadget & gear free, politics free forum. We have a plethora of other forums on this board for every topic imaginable. Read them, post in them, enjoy them. Don't stick to one forum and try to make it what you feel it should be but rather keep it what it is.

Precisely. It's not redundant at all. Combining the forums would be alienating those who want a clean forum to talk in about non-knife-related issues. What about our religious members or those who are married and or have kids? Do they want to open a thread that looks appropriate and see profanity in huge fonts or full-frontals halfway down the page? No. There has to be a forum for off-topic discussions where members don't have to make sure people aren't looking over their shoulder. And if you ask about a watch, it's going to go to Gadgets and Gear. Why? Because that's where it belongs. The forums are nicely organized. Pirates Cove is an exclusive section that takes the really NC-17 stuff and general bicker between the paying members. It's incentive for a gold membership.

You forgot to tell me to put that in my pipe and smoke it. :D

Edit: Ken I'm just bustin' your chops. I don't give a shizzat about that thread to be honest. I just envision you sitting in front of your computer, tearing your hair out and spewing flecks of spittle over the whole situation. Save your energy for the job buddy. :)

What's the problem ??? When a thread moves to another forum, it still leaves it's title where it was originally posted, so everyone can still find it there and just follow it to the new location. It hasn't been damaged, deleted, or edited. It's only been moved to where more people looking for that kind of content are likely to find it.
