I was finishing up a knife tonight for an order and after sanding down to 600 grit I noticed a slight discoloration. After looking further I noticed a couple of tiny cracks in the wood. This really bums me out because the knife was pretty much done. I guess palm needs to be stabilized. And to top it off my printer isn't working so I couldn't print shipping labels :grumpy: A crappy night in the Bowden household. Here it was before I removed the dang scales.

Chris, was it "too cracked" to use, could split further, too large to make the handle uncomfortable to use, or just one of Mother Nature's small "beauty flaws" ??? ???
You & I both being in this business know that lumber & wood does not have Formica "characteristics" . . . . . :)
Be safe.
p.s.: great looking knife by the way, shame it happened this late in the process . . . .

Bill, they were really tiny cracks but I wouldn't want to send a knife out like that. I think it is just the nature of that particular wood really. I have a few sets left so I am going to send them out to get stabilized so that won't happen again. It really is a pretty wood.

Looks like it may have been a natural check! Fortunately I haven't had any issues with palm wood (knock on wood) yet! I'd hate for those cracks to show up after finish sanding! I might have filled them and sold the knife as a second myself.

Man, that's a shame . . . . :(
I have a "few" rifles with wood stocks and some of them have just a couple of Mother Nature's beauty marks on them . . . . hell, it does not hurt the accuracy, and to me just adds a little "character" to the gun . . . .
Tough break partner, if you want to finish it and sell it "as is", p/m me and let me know . . . .
Be safe.

Chris, I just re-read your post & did not see where you had already torn the knife apart.
Sending P/M buddy.
Be safe.
