· 1 quart fresh cranberries
· Juice of 1 lemon
· 1 large white onion, chopped
· 5-10 jalapeno or serrano chiles, to taste
· 3-5 cloves garlic, minced, to taste
· Salt and freshly ground black pepper
But seriously folks, my February knife is appropriately festooned for the season.
Much has already been said about this small wonder. Here are my thoughts:
Ergonomics:
Cliché, but it was larger than I imagined upon initial handling. The handle is very nice and light, yet solid. 50/50 choil gives the feeling of a much larger knife and occupies most of my hand. The Cobra hood is OK, more aesthetically pleasing to me than functional. I was originally worried that it might get caught on the pocket edge during deployment, but so far that has not happened. Upon closer examination you can see how the designers carefully ramped the hood top avoid such a problem, excellent attention to detail as always. The other observation: the cobra hood sits behind the actual sharpened edge, preventing it from catching on most cust unless one angels the blade forward during a deep cut.
Fit-n-Finish:
The red color is a deep red, very nice and the main reason I purchased this blade. I actually like the wire clip OK, it reminds me of my Meerkat, but wider and hence even more secure. Blade was nice-n-sharp out of the box, I chose a combo edge simply because this will be a general utility carry for me, and I find serrations handy sometimes.
Compression lock:
My first experience with this kind of lock. The blade closes with 2 distinct stops near fully closed. Its kind of strange as I expect a blade to snap shut like a traditional lockback, but this one must be pushed into place. The ball detent keeps the blade from coming out, but it seems much easier to accidentally deploy than my other lockbacks. I will be wary on this one as I plan to carry in left front some times, but so far no problems.
Bottom Line:
My last knife was the Carbon Fiber VG-10 Police, a true classic and a flagship of my collection. Even so, this little knife surprised me and is even nicer than I anticipated: it can expect much daily carry in the future. Like many Spydercos, it is a truly unique looking knife, and cute one at that.
The disease has spread now, and there is no turning back. As a marketing guy at heart, I agree with Sal that smaller knives are the way of the future, and I am eagerly waiting for the SS cricket, Dodo, Paramillie, and Ronin
