Help I need some advice please..I live in South Africa and our money aint worth what it used to be.At present the rate of exchange is around 9 Rand to the US dollar.I can get a new Bearclaw via the net for about 25 US whilst here, the cost is around 60 to 80 dollars..Iwork in agriculture and often need to prune and cut plants and veggies,so i like the curved blade a la karambit, and the hole for your finger I think just makes this little knive. This will not be my primary EDC as a AFCK fills that role quite nicely, and that is there only as a backup for my Browning HP.Knowing all this waffle WHAT would you buy for 25 bucks ???
Thanks in advance
Mike

I think that is the best deal for you. There aren't many knives in that class that would do what you want for the knife to perform. There are neck knives although they can range upwards to fifty u.s. dollars. There aren't many knives under $25 that can do the same job as the CRKT Bear Claw. For price and performance the only thing I can think that is a good alternative is a machete, garden shears, asparagus knife, and any pruning knife. None are as compact and anything that is comparable in performance for compactness you will pay more for. Have you considered getting a Canadian Grohmann knife? Some of them are really nice and ordering from Canada might be advanatgeous to you. Maybe if Cold Steel has a sale on some of their smaller knives, you might find a good bargain. Good luck.

the S&W badge knife is similar but with a better steel, 440C, and the same price, but the handle is not as fat & comfy as the bear claw. S&W is a better necker, although the sheath isn't so great.

Hate to steer you away from the CRKT but I would check out the South African Knifemakers Guild and look up Arno Bernard. I am sure he could make you up something similar and custom for a great price! Plus, he is a great guy to deal with. Oh to be in South Africa and have the chance to look up some of the great makers there!!

Thanks for the replies guys.I have spent the last couple of days searching bladeforums and it seems like i wont be doing to bad if I buy the Bearclaw. Now can anyone recommend a better price than 888knives or has anyone got a reason not to do business with them.Unless of course someone wants to sell/trade their used P/E Bearclaw for less than 25 bucks.
Cheers
Mike

Bayou Lafourche has the Bear Claw for $23.99 and Roger is a really good man to deal with. I find the Bear Claw makes a great boot knife. I clip the sheath inverted on the my motorcycle boot. The knife is short, so the handle does not hang down, visibly, below the bottom of my levi pants leg. The sheath also holds the knife tightly in place.

Here is the web page with the Bear Claw: http://64.49.193.154/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=227&1=237&2=-1

I think Opinel makes a hawkbill pruner. It wouldn't be a sturdy as the CRKT but those thin carbon steel blades cut like razors. They are light wieght and only cost 10 or 12 bucks U.S. Just food for thought.
