Hello, i have and carry a CRKT Crawford/Kasper folder. i really like it but the handle is a bit slick. i was wondering if it would be practical to heat-stipple it with a soldering iron. anyone have reccomendations/pictures of home stippled knives? The scales are Zytel by the way, thanks for reading.

Probably a file or dremil tool would work better.I've never seen it done by melting.

I've had the same thought, but haven't had the time to get round to doing it.
The scales are quite thin, so you just want to roughen them. I'd thought of using a drill press with a broad drill fitted and just touching the surface to roughen it. I'd suggest you try it on a piece of test plastic to see the effects first before trying it for real. Let us know how it goes. Please post pictures if you can. Good luck!

i have seen one which a guy used a soldering iron on and it looked horrible, might have worked ok but it just looked horrible lol.

i would use a dremel or drill, anything but the soldering iron.

if you use a soldering iron on zytel the results will be uneven, will raise a rim that will need to be sanding, and will smell awful. Use a dremel if you have one, or a hand-drill can work if used carefully. Also Zytel is easy to file, you could just file some lines across it to increase traction.

i tested the iron on the inside of one handle scale.. it was grippy, but ugly and sort of jagged.. i may try a file, or try to get some of that skateboard tape
