A friend of mine is considering buying a CRKT/Grant Hawk D.O.G.

His concern is the deadbolt mechanism\, he wants to know if the lock is loose like on a SOG Flash, or does it have spring tenion on it all the time,(open or closed)?

Any help wold be appreciated.

I got one of these and I love it. The deadbolt part of the lock moves smoothy but you must be the one that moves it. It is not in any way loose. For those of you who haven't tried this knife I highly recommend that you at least find one to hold. It is like a tank. The lock-up seems as secure as any knife I have ever felt. I hope that this kind of lock finds its way onto other CRKT knives. I have been somewhat suprised that there hasn't been more comments in general on this knife. I do wish that the blade came in a btter steel but for the money and tough solid folder. Can't say enough about it really.

I agree with Mark in his assessment of the D.O.G.! The locking mechanism is always under tension & is pulled back with one or 2 fingers to close. When opening, I find if the locking mechanism is slid back, a quick flick of the wrist will pop the blade into the open position. To close, the locking mechanism is under tension and must be slid back before closing is possible. Seems to be a very solid lock-up!

So let me get this right, the deadbolt is under tension when the knife is in the closed position?

You can open the blade by just pulling it out without using the locking deadbolt but it has to be slid to close the knife. If you slide the deadbolt mechanism to the rear, then flick your wrist, the blade will open with a solid 'click'.
