Review of CRKT Point Guard, Large, Plain Blade.

YESTERDAY
My buddy brought the knife i ordered and shipped last year (it couldn’t reach him in time) and the long waiting is now over. (For those who are confused, i lived very far from US and quality knife is something a rarity, and has to get friends to carry back)

Thanks to Spark who made sure the one to be shipped to me flawless, although i believe CRKT’s QC in general is great.

It’s much bigger than i expected (i handled a small one in a shop in town), but not as huge as my 4” balisong. The heft of the handle is nice to fill my hand (considered small)

Fit and finish: great, not a single flaw, opening smoothly and passes all the liner lock test recommended by Joe and Barr here with flying color, even with oil lubricating the locking surface.

Sharpness: the blade is AUS6, and the sharpness is great, though not as sharp as my CS 29LT when i bought new, but it slice through copier paper without effort. The grind would be thin enough for utility work, as indicated by other reviews on blade profile, specially by Buzzbait. It isn’t a folding prybar for sure, but it would cut my apples well ... i think

Fulloflead mentioned the problem with Zytel finish being rough .. well, mine has none! (You might had a lemon ??)

In short, i am fully satisfied with the buy, and would recommend thsi one to anyone needing decent budget tight medium working knife that one day can be a SD backup.

PS: final note, down here, this price for a knife is considered luxury good already ..

TODAY: it's the best apple cutter and peeler .... the slim profile and grind makes it perfect!

Other small attention to detail: the LAWKS button is positioned so well that putting the knife on the table resting on the back of the handle, the supporting points formed is stable and right, as if the handle slabs are identical, while in actual it's not.
Also, the clip is smooth but firm in my pocket, and gripping the knife with sabre grip, it doesn't interfere for both left and right hand grip. Left hand grip would find my middle finger resting at the valley of the clip, which is practically almost flush with the handle slab.

I am also able to open, and close both with left and right hand no problem, although the liner is designed (as it is common) for right hand.

IN SHORT, I am a happy camper!!

BTW, anyone can tell how to maintain a beadblast finish like this? Will it need immediate washing/cleaning upon work like cutting fruits? or can it be just rinsed with water till i arrive at home to do proper maintenance?

The large CRKT Point Guard has been my EDC now for the last several years. It took me a while to get used to the lack of a substantial belly and the pointy characteristics. ( I don't know why I didn't expect the tip to be so pronounced....after all it is called a "POINT" Guard! ). Also I still am not used to the disk assisted opening , however I was "coming off" an old Spyderco Endura.....and esthetics aside the "spidie" hole is VERY efficient.
All in all though, it has served me well: the price was embarassingly inexpensive; I find that for my every day purposes the blade holds a good edge ( I can't really remember sharpening it all that many times over the last two years! ); the handle is comfortable ....and I just don't require a whole lot more than that ! It's a great folder.

Yeah, right. I forgot one thing: the thumb disk definitely needs some practice on, and with the ball detent being tight and strong, it's a bit harder. I was used to CS' thumb stud, but that's only a matter of practice.

Actually i was looking for opinion on CRKT Point Guard before, but none came up much .. see this thread by fulloflead ...

it's good to know someone else are also using it as EDC ... and i have confidence also with the tip strength, upon checking review by brownie0486 at www.folder-r-us.org

OH.....to answer your question....folks on this form are constantly complaining about how the A6M steel on CRKT knives will show signs of rust. Nope....not on my watch! I live in Seattle where we get some moisture, and I use the Point Guard daily to cut fruit and occasionally to cut damp cardboard. I just wipe it off on something dry and then go over it about every 3 months with a "Sentry" cloth! No sign of rust after two years. Go ahead and "use" it .....that's what the Point Guard was meant for.....you will love it !

i think i will ...:) not to mention i love the blade shape, beautiful .. although a bit more belly would be nice .. but it is a POINT guard .. as you said.

I once left it outside over night in the rain on the top of my garbage can. Luckily it was were I left it the next morning .....I don't think I even dried it off....I just put it in my pocket and it dried itself....NO RUST. I really find it holds an edge well.....and the nice thing about a softer steel is that you can put an edge back on it in seconds with a steel. I just don't use my EDC as a "chopper" or machette so the efficiency of ASU6 is fine for my purposes....oh....the TEFLON washers that CRKT use really help with the disc opening....and....if you think they are slick on the Point Guard ....you ought to try the Kasper/Crawford folder.... it seems to just fly open with a flick of the thumb. Also...I am always using the tip do do something I shouldn't ( like twisting or prying )....It hasn't busted yet! CRKT builds them tough....good value for the money.

Hey .. thanks so much for sharing. It's the usage put to the knife daily that counts for me ...

Wow, now i am convinced that i have a good buy, and my buddy would be happier cause he got the Kasper (small one).

One small last question, the marking/logo on the blade: it's nice, but how durable? will washing and brushing the blade with soap and toothbrush rub it off?

Have a nice night (what time it's there? now it's 2 pm in teh afternoon here)

I just noticed the LAWKS button on mine is all metal while on A G Russell site it's partially Zytel? also the stop in at the back of the blade, it's chrome on A G but black on mine.
the pocket clip is shown there as having quite a pronounced bent, but mine is more curved than bent ..

why is that?

Gramps. Just held and fondled the KFF Pro my buddy got for himself... man, this one is slick .. and it really flies open with a flick of thumb all right.

Further review.

Although thumb disk is still need practice and i sometimes still fumble on the opening, i know that during emergency, i can still flick it open ...

Now, having a thumb disk is great for thumb rest during controlled cutting .. such as peeling apples, with the blade edge facing away and index finger as guide. i can put pressure direct on the blade and the thumb just rest nicely on the disk!

Handle is very comfortable and fill the hand just nice.

As good as the execution of liner lock is, i have found that it's simple and nice. Personally, i prefer to have simple mechanism for lock (such as this liner, balisong and lock back) than something complicated. The less parts you have .. the less chance uncle Murphy plays his law ..
