I am fairly new to the world of custom knives. Although I don't consider myself a serious collector, I am curious how you determine which knives would retain or increase their value. Is it luck or just careful obsevation of a maker's skill and reputation? My current strategy (for all two pieces) is to go for what I like without a great deal of emphasis on a particular name. I am also fairly practical by nature, so I doubt I would ever buy a knife that I wouldn't use (unless it was strictly as an investment). Price is also a consideration, but from the quality and time associated with many maker's knives, you guys charge too little. Finally, what is the best text on custom knives? I have considered Knives 2001 or Levine's Guide. Thanks in advance for the input.

I 2nd, colect what you like. after a while you may spot trends and such. but if you want to invest go with funds or bond first.

Dogman, thanks for the info on the book. Great knives by the way. I have a feeling that one of your SRJ hunters or Utilities will be making it's appearance in my hand soon. Those are both great looking knives, but the problem is I can't decide which I like better. Will you have both at the upcoming show in Tampa? Maybe both is the answer?

Anyway, I did not mean to come off like I am only looking at customs as an invesment. Knives have always had a wonderful artistic quality to me. Form and function rolled into one. When I was much younger, I gave my neighbor an old deer antler. He took that antler and combined it with fire, anvil, hammers, and an old leaf spring into one of the most beautiful knives I have ever seen. He also taught me the rudiments of smithing which I hope someday to pick up again.

But enough of that. My original post was aimed at becoming more informed on customs. So, I will begin with some of the books and keep visiting here. Thanks for the input.

BTW RHINOKNIVES, funds and bonds are nice, but not nearly as pretty ;) .
