Gunner,
Interesting concept and Phil has made some valid points. When you say you design the knife. Do you actually make a 3 dimensional drawing? Hole placement, exact filework, etc?
Speaking for myself, my designs have always been two dimensional. Due in large part to the fact that each maker has some different equiment and they can better design the actual placement of holes, etc.
When I send a sketch to a maker it is understood that I am looking for their imput. Some things they cannot do, some things can be done to be better looking or make a better functioning knife. Only the maker can tell me this.
What I have done, what Phil has alluded to is that you should design a knife, to be sold exculusively through you, and have a prototype made.
I will tell you that this will be time consuming and expensive. Many of the knives that I have had made were to feature stone and Ivory for handle materials. I have literally thrown away thousands of dollars worth of materials that cracked or broke.
However, many times that is the only way to see if something will work or not.
A great design on paper does not always transpose to a great knife in metal and the handle material of your choice.
Having read your previous post, I thought that you were looking for a deal with one of the factories. If that was the case, it will be very difficult. As right now the factories are more interested in name and gadget locks.
Than they are doing their own design work. Consequently, the way to approach them for a contract is come up with a great new wiz bang lock.
If you can perform in the role of a design consultant, my hat is off to you. As you have created a new job description and get further kudo's for thinking "outside the box".
Best of luck.
