Custom?

I was at the NY Custom knife show and purchased a prototype CQC7 from Ernest Emerson. It's just like the Benchmade or one he's about to release himself with g-10 scales etc. The blade is hand ground by Emerson himself however and the stamp says EMERSON SPECWAR KNIVES. The blade grind quality and lock up feel of the knife is considerably better than the factory preproduction that he had there. Is this a custom knife?

Fenris,
Even EE makes the distiction between the knives made in his factory and the knives he builds as custom. As a prototype, you may want to ask him or maybe one of our compadres knows for sure. Considering that he ground the blade you have something special custom or not.

Hi Fenris;

it sounds like you have picked up a nice variation of the new CQC7. I don't think it is considered a custom but, I am sure it will be worth more than a full production knife.
How many of this style did he sell? Is yours a black blade? a tanto style? Regards, Bill

Hi Fernis,

No, your knife is not a custom knife. Emerson ground the blade and thats his contribution to the knife. His SPECWAR mark on this type of blade is mis-leading.

I talked with an individual at the show who had one of these "benchmade" knives at the show. He was a little "miffed" when I explained to him that at least 5 of these "prototypes" were made and the price that Emerson sold them for in Las Vegas this past February was $350.00. He politely told me I was "confused". I said dont take my word for it ask Emerson, who was right behind me at the show.

He asked Emerson, then came back and apologized for telling me that I was confused.

This is why this type of knife brings confusion in this forum and in the collecting realm. Obviously, this individual who didnt buy the knife from Emerson (Emerson is very good about explaining the reality of this type of knife to potential customers)was decieved. The problem is when the knife gets on the open market, it can easily be passed off for a "custom" knife to someone who does not know better. Because the SPECWAR logo is on the blade.

Also, Fernis, I would contact Emerson and get some documentation with that knife. It may not help, but it definetly wont hurt when you go to sell the knife.
