I know several of the collectors in this forum own and use custom balisongs, and I understand that the quality of such a knife is very high end. But where exactly do you get them, or how do you contact the custom maker? Do they have phone #'s or websites? Also, in what price range would you find a custom? I know they can go for over a very high price.

Thanks in advance for any response.

For a new custom from the maker, you can contact most makers directly. Many of them are here on bladeforums.com. There is an incompletel list of links on my site. Most have websites and e-mail these days and, of course, you can call. I should really update that. A few makers ask that you go through their dealers.

I usually prefer to meet my maker personally at a show. I find that we can have a good, interactive discussion, maybe go out for drinks. It's a good experience.

Price? Everything from free to at much as, in my case, $8500. The average for a simple custom balisong is gonna be about $350. Most makers will want some deposit. Some will insist on payment in full before work begins. In several cases, I've simply asked a maker to make me a knife, they've done so with no discussion of price, and then when presented with the knife I've had to ask, "How much?" Then, the maker will shyly say, "Oh, it's not very good. Maybe $X." My response is, "It's wonderful and I won't give you a penny less than $Y!" (Y > X). The maker then responds, "Oh, it's not worth $Y. I could never take that. How about $Z?" (Y > Z > X). And I say, "Ok, it's a deal!" So, we end up negotiating in reverse.

A couple of important things to remember: first, this process takes time. I've waited years for custom balisongs. Don't try and rush the maker. It'll only make things worse. Second, don't come to a maker with a blueprint and say, "Here, build this." These men (and women) are artists. It's ok to bring a few ideas, a few requests, but let them have some creative space to express themselves. You'll get a much, much better product, something that's true art.

To add to what Chuck said, the hardest part is to find out who the makers are, and what style of bali's they make. You need to remember that is will be hard for a makers to deviate from a set pattern, because most do not have the high tech machines to assist them in their output. So, after determing which maker makes the type of bali's you like, it's just a matter of placing the order. Common sources like the Knifemaker's Guild or this forum can assist you in getting in touch with them.

Prices for them as I can confirm them today are (most of them can be found by doing a search on them in this forum):

Dale Reif : $375+ for the 4" depending handle materials. Also makes the Perrin Bali's.

Darrel Ralph : Has not published prices for his customs, only for the Gemini.

Dobruski : $190 to $400 depending on handle materials.
http://www.taymo.com

Walter Erickson : $350+ depending on blade style and or handle materials.

Wendell Fox : $600+ depending on features. (Doesn't make that many).

Ralph Turnbull : $400+ for users. Can get way up there for high end stuff. Had expressed intertest in Sept. to get back to bali's but nothing concrete as of today. Has been known to make bali's from a customer's design.

Doyle Nolen : Bali status unknown, but construction and prices were comparable to Erickson.

Along with the excellent suggestions that Tony made...Pardy Bugtai up in "Chuck Country" (Oregon) makes some very nice Balis. I have more than "several" of his..., and although I've "tweaked" a few somewhat.., they are strong pieces many of which are representational of the Batangas/Filipino design, with some nice work in high carbon damascus within the domain of his work.

"Pabu Knives" is what he calls it...right Chuck??? His son Rommel also makes some Balisongs.., and you can get contact information from me if you'd like to email me. No website is available...sorry!

Pardy does not take "custom" orders. He makes what he wants to make and if you like it, then he'll sell it to you. In this respect, he is a true artist. Pardy also speaks limited English. Rommel is a little bit more the businessman and fluent in English. I'm trying to get more Pabu pieces to offer via my website. I know that it's a bit difficult to buy something site unseen. So, by putting 'em up on my site, maybe more of you can see something you like.

Speaking of your website Chuck, looks like the 49SPL is already worth double retail!! INCREDIBLE!!! Out of curiosity, what would you expect a less rare 49-01 to go for in the aftermarket?

And as for customs, let's not forget Mer's handles! He does great work for an even better price. I have an Erickson on order that will be my first true custom, which i'm looking forward to very very much!

ExamonLyf, do you have any pictures from your collection of Pardy Bugtai's work?

Just to give you some ideas...

OOOOH:eek:

That's what i like about you Chuck;) :D

edit What kind of price range may i ask are we talking here?

These are all in that $300-$400 range.

They all sold in my last Shameless Commerce Division Sale. Unfortunately, the current sale does not include any Pabu pieces. Maybe next time.

Those are really beautiful, esp. the damascus. :D I'm surprised that you only said $300-400 range, I would've guessed more.

Actually Pardy did make two Balisongs for me to order.., but I didn't know that wasn't his general policy. I usually catch him when he comes down this way to visit Rommel.., so I guess the translation helps a bit.

I'm sorry I'm not "camera ready" yet Masse.., but I will post pictures when possible. When I get my other knife from Darryl Ralph I may beg Chuck to photograph my two "Gemini's" together, so maybe he'd do some of Pardy's also  ? BTW.., Chuck already graciously offered to do that,-without me begging-, just to clarify.

I will gladly photograph any and all Gemini's when they come out. I'd also love to have more of Pardy's work. I'm actually working on a book of photographs of his knives right now. I've got all the balis I need for the book, though. Sorry. Pardy does wonderful fixed blade, folding, and gravity knives too, many of which are in traditional Filipino styles. I'll also be adding a gallery to my website of just Pabu balisongs shortly. The good news is that Advanced Camera Repair called today and the famous Spotmatic is ready to be picked up.

I have a couple of his fixed blades (3 actually)...a "Persian" and a couple a traditional Mendanao/Batangas type. Also one very unusual piece made from a file that is "Killer Cool" :)

The "Custom" order I mentioned ealier was actually a collaboration. I know he gets some nice Nickel Damascus from Doug Brack, so I talked him into making a couple of modified (very modified) Wee-Hawk blades for some polished BM Ti-Handles for me. I saw a modified Bali he did with some Ray Coon Damascus up at the Oregon show and that gave me the idea (so I bought it..lol). They turned out great (handling wise).., but not an exact matching set (which is OK) since I guess I was "pushing the envelope a little"..nice work though, and I happen to like the traditional blade styles Pardy does.

Thanks for all the replies:) . I'm thinking I may get a Dobruski SS bowie with white micarta if I ever get the money.

Oh, BTW, does anyone know the weight of a Ti Drobruski?
It weighs a little lighter than the new BM Ti series. Very comfortable handles that flies because of their light weight.
