Woo Hoo, After working late at the office I came home today and found a package sitting on the Living room floor. My 5"x8" double acting hydraulic cylinder from Surplus Center arrived today! I only need about a jillion more parts and then fabricate either an H-frame or C-frame press structure and I'll be in business (maybe this time next year at this rate!:D) The UPS guy is really starting to hate my address, but at least the heavy packages are spread out!

My eight year old son has his eyes on this too, he really wants to know how flat an aluminum can will be if we put it in the hydraulic press!:D

Will this cylinder be allright just sitting in the box in my garage for a year or so? It's ports have plastic plugs in and the shaft is retracted. Grease the pins and bit of exposed shaft maybe?

Congrats. There is no feeling like getting your first double acting cylinder. Savor the momment. It should should be fine for a year or two. I dont see how you can wait that long.

Guy that's cool, can't wait to see what you come up with in a couple years! Congratulations, I hope it doesn't take you too long to get your press built.

Dave

Hey Bruce, I want to thank you you again for your help when I was trying to figure out hydraulic presses. I don't know how I can wait to set up my press either! In the mean time I'll just have to content myself with setting up a new forge. If I'm lucky and the overtime at work keeps up at it's current pace I might be able to order the pump soon. The motor is going to be the expensive element and I'm going to have to wire in some suitable 220 circuits.

Dave, I hope I can come up with some interesting things in the coming years. I know you will be too. I'll be forty this year and I'm already lamenting not starting all of this 10 years ago! I feel like I need to really pump up the level of work I put into this but you know how that goes. All things in good time I suppose.

Peter..... I think you are right. He will be up and running much sooner. Guy it may take awhile to build the equipment but when you finally pump out some steel you will be at a all new higher level.
