Hi Bob(s),

First off, I need to buy a D2-M Sifu with the full fingergrooves. G10 grips and a stonewashed blade will be fine. Any idea the approximate ship date on these? Will the D2-M add to the price over ATS34 any?

Second, Sifu#1 has help up VERY well in all respects. The blade never rubbed on the liners, the text on both sides is perfect, the lockwork is rock-solid. There are however scratches on the G10 from daily carry and since it's one of the clipless models, I can't just swap the grips across from a production piece.

What I want to do is pay for a re-grip job, a professional sharpening job and replacement of a couple of slightly dinged screws and other small parts. Again, I'm willing to PAY for this service. If possible, I'd like to ask about getting white micarta grips that are smooth-finished because I have access to a couple of local scrimshaw artists.

None of this should be seen as criticism. Sifu#1 has held up magnificently as a daily-carry defensive piece as it was intended. But given it's history, it deserves an "upscale retirement" when I have a new D2-M carry piece to replace it with on the street. It will still see some "dress occasion carry" of course

in a leather sheath to protect the scrimshaw.

Speaking of scrimshaw, can you guys handle that part too? At what sort of price range?

Any help appreciated,

Jim

I am waiting and hoping for a standard grip D-2 Sifu as well, though I also hoping for carbon fiber scales, on mine, so I would also be very interested in the answer to Jim's questions.

I have a Special Edition SIFU on order and look forward to handling the collectable user.

It's too late to put in my 2 cents now but I'm going to do it anyway.

My wish list would have been for Rekat to retain the "pinkie ridge" that Nakano had recommended in one of his posts to enhance draw cuts and blade extractions. My other wish would have been for a smoother and more rounded G-10 edge to protect my ***** hands.

D2 Sifus stone wash finish with standard handles (all the finger grooves) will be first should be going out the door next week. Carbon fiber black T and the rest of the Sifu line won’t be too far behind.
Will the D2 add to the price over ATS34 we won’t know until the first batch gets off the grinder it seems the company that grinds our blades is learning about D2 it can be a bear to grind.
Carnivore cub will be next to get D2 and should be out be for the end of the year, Carnivores in D2 will be out some time early next year.
Jim I wish we could help you out with the white micarta grips but and I’m sorry to say that we don’t have the facilities to do custom work at this time. As for the rest that will run some where from $20 on up plus shipping depending what parts you want or need to replace.

Hmmm...Bob, assume it'll need new grip panels. They're scratched. The problem is, you'll have to do SOME customization on the grip panels regardless because this is a no-clip specimen.

So...if you have to take a set of grips off of the production line before the clip-holes get drilled anyways, any chance of slipping some white panels into the line

? Forget scrimshawing or engraving, I can deal with that on my own.

Or put it another way: factoring in that this'll need a no-clip grip set, can you do it at all even in black micarta?

Jim

I look forward to getting a D2 with Black-T coating.

How is the grip on the carbon fiber? What colors in G-10?

At the moment I have the SIFU #59 w/ Green G-10. Great knife. Since it is still in pristine shape, I would substitute the D2 as a user. A fine picnic knife.

If the mills were in house it would be just that simple but their not and that makes the logistics of getting a one off set through the system rather large. To keep price down the number of scales we order in a run is quite large and depending on whether sales are up or down it could be six months be for we place another order. If some where along the line the material got misplaced or forgotten about it could end up taking a year to get dun. To make a set of scales for Sifu eats a lot of material and nobody sells slabs of G10 or micarta sizes that will make one set. Considering the exec material you would have to buy plus extra shipping handling and shop time doing the finish you want that set of scales would end up costing more than a new knife. All things considered a custom maker could do the work cheaper and faster than we can.
That’s why we can’t offer custom work until at such time that we can get mills in house and some one capable of doing custom work.

Jim, your mention of micarta scales for the SIFU got me excited. It is my first choice for handle material--well, actually a close tie with titanium. In my inexperienced opinion, if a knife's handle is designed properly--such as the SIFUs--it would seem that the material used for the scales need not be roughly textured. Are there any other SIFU fans that would like to see a micarta or titanium scale option?

Toothed,
I have voiced my desire for a blue handled
Carnivore. Micarta or G-10 would be fine. I
currently have a Bladeforums Red handled Carnivore and love it. I'm still waiting for a blue handled Carnivore though.

I am confused. I thought that the Spec. Ed.
Sifu without all the finger grooves was to be the first D-2 Sifu to come out. Am I wrong?
I just wondered since I put one on order. Anyone know the answer to this question?

Arch Angel, I was also confused by the Bob Brother post. I thought that it was a misstatement that would be corrected shortly. If we don't see a correction soon, I think that there will be alot of anxious SE SIFU buyers. Also, I thought the shipment was supposed to be early November but now I'm hearing "within 30 days" in a mid-November post. Are we now looking at a mid-December shipment?

The word "micarta" was entirely a brainfart on my part.

There's no micarta Sifu grips. Never was, prolly never will be.

Jim

As another forumite with a SE SIFU on order, I'll add my $.02 worth of concern. If the D2 with standard grips are coming out first, then when are the SEs coming. I thought Mike T stated in the initial announcement that the SEs were going to be the first and would ship in 60 days or less. Now we're hearing about 90 days (+?) and regular SIFUs shipping first? I'm starting to lose my sense of humor about this.

Here’s what’s going on the D2 blades are going to get here be for the SE Sifu handles get here. We have parts to build regular Sifus and with the backorders we have for regular Sifus there going on line first as soon as the SE handles come in the door production will switch to the SE Sifus. Now if something happens that the handles for the SE Sifus get here t or be for the blades the SE,s go down the line first I don’t think this will happen but if it dose SE’s will be first. This will not delay production of the SE’s in any way its just the way the parts are coming in. I hope this clears things up some I can’t stop the line and wait for the SE handles to get here.

Thanks Bob. That clears things up a bit.
(Doesn't make waiting any easier though

(slaps head)

Of course, the special grip Sifus need unusual grip parts that may show after D2-M blades come raining down...D2 blades can go in normal grips.

Gotta get an order in ASAP

Hmm, Aren't the Special First Run BladeForum Edition D-2 Sifu's being marketed as "first run" and will carry the "first run" mark on its blade? Now we hear that the SE Sifu may actually be put on the production line behind the REGULAR-handled D-2 Sifu. Wouldn't that make the true "first run" Sifu's the REGULAR-handled D-2 Sifu's?

How will the potential first run of REGULAR handled D-2 Sifu's affect the SE BF D-2 Sifu's? Will the REGULAR handled D-2 Sifu blades carry any of the designations as the Special Edition model? (i.e., etchings on the blade).

I can understand the economics of the situation; however, although I still want my stonewash SE BF D-2 Sifu it seems that some of the "magic" is gone.
