help. Anyone have any tips/tricks etc. for grinding daggers especially the tip. I am still stuck with a 4X36 grinder so it has to be flat ground. Thanks.

Sashcord, Lay out the profile very presicely. I use that blue layout fluid spray. 6" dial calipers are very handy but not neccesary. Scribe the center of the edges. Grind to the scribed lines on both sides. The grind lines will overlap somewhere close to the tip which gives the blade its taper. You will learn as soon as you start grinding. Have fun. You may want to try it on an inexpensive piece first. Bruce

sashcord,

Take your time and don't get in a hurry. Grind very lightly near the tip. Do one side of the knife at a time. At first the bevel will overrun the tip but it will line back up once you grind the second bevel. If it doesn't line up well you can clean it up by draw-filing the bevels.

The more you practice grinding daggers, the better you will become.

That's good advice you've gotten. I've only ground a few daggers, but it's not that bad.

As they said, follow the curvature of the profile as you round the tip. It looks funny at first, because you have a straight grind the length of the blade (centered) and then at the tip it curves around. But as soon as you do the other side it balances out, and tapers the tip down.

Just take your time and be careful...

Good luck

sashcord,

If you run into trouble grinding the tips just draw file them. If you start on the blade and draw the file towards the tip you can round the tip off. I start at the very tip of the blade and push the file across the blade.
All of these blades below were hand filed. I did not grind them on a machine. I hope to have a photo tutorial posted within the next week or two. Stay tuned.

Sash, the guys have pretty well covered it. If you haven't done any draw filing look at Don Fogg's site, it covers it pretty well if I recall correctly. One tip that might help or maybe two is 1. use a new file, it cuts sooo much better 2. keep your file clean, chips will leave some gouges you would,t believe 3. lay your blade on a flat surface to file, if you don,t the blade flex will cause you to chase your lines back and forth. Well that was three, but Okies can't count anyway. Hang in there. :0) mike

Well, after seeing those blades of Phillips's, maybe you shouldn't listen to him...it looks like he needs lots more practice
