The last few days I have been working on a project I have one more forge welding to make a 1040 layer billet of 5160 with 1 cable Damascus layer to every 25 layers of 5160 to give a little more figure to the pattern but I am torn between laminating a piece of 5160 between the two stacks or using some cable.what would you do I would appreciate your advice
thanks Russ

I'd get a piece of thin sheet nickel and sandwich that between that and then hammer the billet into a round (octagonal) bar and twist it at least one full twist. Or, just leave out the nickel and twist it. Just make sure to get the octagonal (8 sided) shape nice and even or you could get some weld shearing. That's never fun. :)

If you think that you need to san-mai this billet then you will need to add another piece.Otherwise I would just leave the bilet the way it is and weld it together.
As for what to add in the middle,I you are not going to fold it again I would pass on the cable as the grain wont maych up very well, unless you weld and fold it a couple of times first then it will be homogenese and look more like the rest of the billet. If you use the 5160 you will run the chance of having a big wide layer at the cutting edge that wont match up to the rest of the bar.
Just some things that I have tried and found out.
