I finished this hawk up yesterday and sent it to its new home, Throught you all might find it pretty interesting. John Williams contacted me a couple of weeks ago about making him 1 of my spike hawks but instead of using plain high carbon steel to make it out of damascus. The hawk head and top cap were made from 1 1/4" improved plow share cable(1095) and the handle is from a stick of highly figured curly maple that John sent. I dyed the maple with fielings leather dye and then hand rubbed with boiled linseed oil, sure was a pretty piece of wood.

What do you all think.

Thanks,

Bill

Heres a close up of the hawk and cap. I drilled the handle about 3" deep, drilled and tapped the cap, threaded on a 1/4"x 3 " piece of althread, then filled the handle with epoxy and placed the cap.

Wow, Just imagine how much you could trade that for 250 years ago.
Thats a fine Hawk!!!

It's just beautiful Bill. I never have gotten the knack for hawk forging. Looking at that thing though, I think I'll work on it!

That dye worked really well on the wood. How did you attach that cap on the top? Is there a taper on the hawk? Looks excellent.

HEY bill I love it The one I got from you is great
But I can always use a pair :D :D You know my moto never too many hawks:D :D :D

Very Cool Bill..

Great work.

Guys it looks great but bills hawks can take a beating!!!
The ont I bought from him has over 200 throws on it and the balance
is great on it, for a spike hawk.

Thanks everyone for the great comments, :)
Bruce, I can't wait to see your hawks, there's just something about a hawk, I really like making them, but some days they can be a real headache spliting the handle hole and keeping everything straight. This one was made when the moon was right, I guess, because it worked out really nice. :D

thanks
Bill

Bill you need to post this on the tomahawk forum for those guys to see.It is a great looking Hawk.

SOME days you make something and you know it was worth the sweat and effort. You had one of those days.

Great job

I am the owner of the Bill Buxton Damascus Hawk pictured above. It is outstanding work to say the least. Bill is truly a gentleman in every sense of the word! I have at present over 75 hawks in my collection, but none better than this one.

Thanks again Bill, can't wait for the next one!

Thanks so much John, it really makes a maker feel good when he gets such great compliments from his or her customers. Hope to start the next one in a few days, I'll be in touch.

Thanks

Bill
