Hi all, I am brand new to the forum. I've been waiting for almost a year on the Damascus blade Chris Reeve Mnandi that I ordered. I've never owned a Damascus blade before and was wondering about maintenance. I've been told that it stains easily. Also, can anyone describe the characteristics of Damascus steel eg. hardness, edge holding, edge taking etc.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome, scars.

If you ordered a non-stainless damascus blade, then Chris Reeve sends a little package of grease along with the knife to use on the blade.

Chris Reeve buys damascus from different makers. I think most of the damascus steel he uses is from Devin Thomas. http://www.devinthomas.com/

I've not had a rust problem with either my stainless or non-stainless damascus blades from Chris Reeve. But, where I live (San Francisco Bay Area) we don't have much of a problem with rusting. At least if you aren't right next to the ocean.

The damascus in my Sebenzas seems to take an edge well and it holds it well.

I think you would have to call Chris Reeve to find out the hardness since I assume he does the heat treating. There is also info on the FAQ part of the Devin Thomas site.

Good luck,
Rich

Maybe someone else can help here. I've thought that maybe damascus made with the layers running roughly along to the length of the blade might be a little stronger than damascus with the layers running across the blade.

The layers in the zebra damascus seem to run across the blade. I've not tried to use my zebra damascus Sebenza as a pry bar, but I'm guessing that the ladder damascus might make a better pry bar.
