I'm the owner of a new damascus knife made by Richard Kacsur of Fairbanks Alaska. My question is about rust prevention for 1095/nickle steel. Richard suggests the use of 3 in 1 oil because he has had trouble with re-etching blades with other oils on them. Has anyone used another rust preventative with good results..Is there a solvent that would remove all oil residue if a re-etch job was needed? Thanks fellow knife-knuts

I pretty much use Renn. Wax (shorter term) or Rig (for long term storage of damascus.) Both methods work for me.

I didn't have much luck with a few things on damascus.
i use camilla oil from Murray Carter. The Japanese use it on sushi knives. I t is none toxic and doesn't leave a taste
and it doesn't get gummy and evaporates very slow.
All oils and be washed off and re etched. It is a pain though.
Cheers, Wally :)

I like to wax my damascus. I use minwax hard paste wax made for funriture. I clean the blade and apply two or three coats. It leaves a hard, bright finish that lasts even with regular handleing. I have yet to have a blade rust after this. This is for blads that will not see use.

If a blade is to be used, the camilla oil Wally mentioned is excellent.
