Danish knife laws?

Recently, a friend on SF had a package of Spyderco folders confiscated by the Danish postal service/police. The explanation was that one-handed opening folders are ilegal to own. Police have given him 30 days to convince them to return them to the US sender or they will be destroyed. He is a bladesmith with an interest in collecting and using Spyderco folders and we have traded blades with no problem before.

Does anyone here know of an on-line resource that lays out Danish knife laws or have any insight here? Are there Spyderco dealers in Denmark?

Hi Java

The Danish laws regarding weapons are pretty strict.

It is not legal to carry fixed blades in public areas but they are legal to own, if the blade is no longer than 12 cm (4,75"). You can get a special collectors permit for longer blades. Folders are legal to carry if the blade is no longer than 7 cm (2,75”). Onehand openers are illegal, as are Balisongknives and switchblades. A lot of other stuff, like push daggers is also illegal. Actually there has recently been a lot of noise about the Leatherman Wave and similar products, which are considered illegal weapons because of the onehand opening blades.

In some areas I think the law and its interpretation is not quite clear though.

I know of no on-line resources in English but here are a couple in Danish:

www.dds-odense.suite.dk/Vaabenlov.htm
www.politi.dk/p19/Boeder/vaabenloven.htm

I don’t think there are any Spyderco dealers in Denmark.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jan P!

I've referred Voxnaes from the spyderco.com forums to this post. I hope you two can hook up and compare your experiences. He's a super guy and just in a world of hurt about this. It's great to find such a diverse spectrum of information and helpful people here at BFC.

Take care,

Java
