I heard through the grape-vine that Darrel's newest folder, an integral lock, is in the partially-done prototype stage. Are there any pictures you can share with us?

I do not know if he has any pics yet but Darrel was telling me about this knife a week or so ago and I think that my Sebenza Money might be redirected. This sound like it will be a FANTASTIC knife. The large model will have a blade length of 4". Too cool!!!

Here's the URL for the pic.

Better hold on to that Sebenza money.

Yeah I'm crazy, but what do you want me to do about it

I was with Darrel this past weekend at his house (very gracious host btw) and saw the early stages of the apogee. YES you'd better hold off on that Sebenza. This thing is gonna be very cool. 3 sizes too, from a decent pocket carry to a big honkin folder with a blade of a little OVER 4". The fit and lockup will be great as usual, but the finish is whats gonna be so cool. He anodized one handle slab while I was there so we could check it out and it came out awesome. Just picture a satin finish on the raised portions of the handle and a rainbow ano in the grooves and recesses. This is optional of course, but thats the way to go IMO. All three sizes are very comfortable in the hand. The blade in the pic you saw hadn't been ground yet either, thats going to add a lot. He said look for them in a month or two, email him he can give you all the details, specs - prices etc....jeff

Yup. I was going to purchase a decorated Sebenza until Darrel directed me to the new Apogee. After seeing the picture, I ordered (2) small models. One will be plain for daily carry with clip and the other will be dressed up for more formal occasions and carried in a sheath.

The first 20 of each size will be numbered so order them quickly.

Wow! Darrel has done it again.

The blade is recurved. You guys who have been having trouble sharpening the Axis better get some practice!

Can someone tell me if the grind is flat or not? If not, what is it? Darrel's short hollow grind?

The knife has a tall thin flat grind Joe..
A spyderco triangle stick set will make it pop hair. The knife is very easy to sharpen. The recurve (curve) on these knives has been reduced a bit so its easy to sharpen and still has that recurve that I like in a blade. So its the best of both worlds

Darrel,

Definitely a good idea to deliver the knife with a Sharpmaker-degrees edge.

Darrel, if you'll remember I complained loudly about the difficulty in sharpening the recurve on my Krait. I've gotten practice since then, and I have it down now. I must say, the performance is *so* enhanced by a recurve that I've really become a fan. Sharpening the recurve will make you feel like a novice sharpener again for a few weeks, but it's worth the effort.

Spyderco Sharpmaker (or an V-stick system) is the only way to go in sharpening recurves. At least for me. I know some guys sharpen recurves on those ceramic or diamond sharpening "steels", but I haven't worked up the guts to try that yet.

Recurves are harder to sharpen on a flat stone.

Period.

So,
Just turn your sharpmaker stones around so you use the apex of the V to sharpen, not the flat.

I will gladly take the tradeoff for the unsurpassed cutting power of the recurve.

According to Darrel, this blade will be thin enough to really cut.

I am ordering mine in Talonite. Anyone else?

The only excuse for not being able to sharpen a recurve is not owning a sharpmaker.
If the edge is particularly thick, you may need to find some speed sleeves.

Anyway, im going to sharpen a Convex ground, reverse curve Mamba 10" whopper tonight.
Do you want to complain about sharpening your Krait again Joe?

Although it seems natural now, on the group you'll read about a lot of people having a lot of trouble sharpening their recurved blades. The thin blade geometry of the Apogee will help, but that will be more than made up for by the more wear-resistant steels Darrel uses (versus, say, the ATS-34 in the Axis or 8A in the El Hombre).

It does take some practice, but it gets easier for sure. And again I'll agree about the great performance from the recurve.

Darrel- if you (and Spark) will forgive a personel question, will you be set up at the Dover show this year? Thanks. Mike K.

I have an order in with Darrel for a small one in 420v -- my first exposure to this kind of steel. I really like 440v, so I'm pretty darn curious.

Beware of talking to Darrel in email, I just tossed an email to him once asking about the Krait after Steve Harvey raved about it -- now I have a Krait and an Apogee on order and I'm starting to eye one of the other size Apogee models too! I'm almost caved and also picked up a Krait from Les while I waited for the custom 420v one to arrive!

Joe -- I was one of those folks that needed an education of sharpening a recurve blade with the Sharpmaker -- perhaps a bunch of us Bay Area types can have a gathering of sharp objects and get a demo!

For sure. Steve and I get together for beers and knives occasionally (the last event even featured sticks and swords). We'll have to get a bigger group together! Plus, I wanna see your Apogee

I've got the large Apogee in 420V on order with Darrel. I really looking forward to getting a hold of it, as this will be my first experience with 420V. I'm already nuts about 440V, and Darrel assures that I'll be even more satisfied with 420V. The grind on mine will be slightly different from the standard grid that he does. I sent Darrel a special request - a pic of the blade on my beloved Spyderco Military model and asked if he could grind the blade the same way. Last night I received word from him that he was able to grant my request! Thanks again Darrel - you da man!!

I just fell for the 3.9' version. Having the blade hand rubbed (want a more polished look)-no pocket clip, plus I called Darrel back with a question (good thing)- because I ended up requesting a darker ano', didn't think of it before hand. Darrel is definitely on my "cool" list for knife makers.
