Dealer v. Direct

Now that I've decided to have Santa bring me a Sebenza for Christmas, I have another question:

I've noticed many people on this board have ordered their knives directly from Chris Reeve, rather than through online or bricks and mortar retailers. I'd like to know people's reasons for making that decision, since apparently there's a significant waiting period if you order direct.

Are people ordering directly because they can't find the specific knife they want at another retailer? Do they want to give Reeve the whole profit, rather than making him divide the pie with a dealer? Are there questions of authenticity when buying through a dealer?

I'm probably going to buy a no-frills large Sebenza (though the wood inlaid version is undeniably handsome), and would like to know if there's some reason I should deny myself the instant gratification of ordering from a dealer. Thoughts?

I have ordered directly from CRK simply because of the pleasure of dealing with Anne and the rest of the staff.

There are plenty of reputable dealers out there, so if you are in a hurry you should be able to find what you want in stock. Either way, I hope you enjoy the knife.

If you have problems locating a dealer with availability, you might call Reeve knives,

My wife asked me what I wanted for my 40th birthday and I told her that all I wanted was a 1999 Umfaan. I then gave her a list of dealers. After she called 5 dealers with no luck, I told her to call Anne and see if they had any- none-3 month wait. But, she was extremely helpful in providing my wife with the dealers and phone numbers recently shipped knives. First phone call to Wright's Sporting Goods and we had a new Umfaan on its way. Thanks Anne!

However, my wife will not give it to me until December 23rd!

Daniel, you are one lucky guy!

My brother doesn't get his Sebenza until the 21st, but he doesn't know its coming so it must be easier for him. Just ten more days...

Another reason why someone might order through CRK is customization. If you want dual thumbstuds, your own decoration, or polished screws, then you are going to have to wait.
