I have decided to get a bm, and I'm picking between the 942, the 951, and the 953. I've decided on them basically for their looks and size, and obviously that benchmade makes very good knives. For camping, hiking, wittling, carving, and other mediocre outdoors stuff, which of these knives would hold up best? I assume they'd all be up to the challenge, but which would be best?

Also what's the deal with the griptillian handles and the aluminum 942 handle? does one have more powerful characteristics than the other? I prefer heavier handles than lightweight handles, just for mental security, because I heard Griptillian handles were flimsy-feeling(just felt flimsy).

Plain edge btw...

And I was wondering if it would be an issue, visually, if i got a bt (black blade) model of whichever I decide? Would the wear be really unsightly, or would it hold up pretty good (planning on having knife for a while)? Does anyone have any picks of a worn out black blade, that would help.

Thanks

Can you please double check you model numbers? ;)

Do you mean 551, and 553? The Grips? If so:

I also believe all will hold up to what you're going to do to it. :)

I have never heard of a grips handles feel flimsy (although, I have read that the Pika's handles do, mixed up models?). If it get's cold where you're at, the handles can get really cold, and really uncomfortable in your bear hands.

As for the BT, I'm not too sure, but I think it should hold up pretty good, still depending on what you're doing with it.

One more thing: Playing the numbers game with BM is confusing, try hold off on it for a while. Don't try to do it with Spyderco ;) . I don't think most of us here know Spydies numbers(have nice names that's why :) ).

EDIT: If you're serious about an outdoors folder, the 806D2 would be another good choice. It's a bit bigger than the grips.

Just my opinion, but I would much rather have the Aluminum handled knife than the FRN handled knife. The 940/41/42, etc., with it's Aluminum frame would be much more sturdy. Cost you a bit more, though.

^ I believe the Griptillians are Noryl GTX, which feels a tad better (more sturdy?) than FRN does.

Since you didn't mention a budget, I'd recommend the Benchmade 805 TSEK (in M2) or the 806D2 AFCK. The difference between them is blade shape and steel. They have the same handle. One accurate word to describe them both is "solid." More words can be found elsewhere.

The BT versions don't wear too pretty, but they will still protect the steel when they're no longer black. I remember seeing a picture of a beat up 705, looked like it went to hell and back. Made me wish I used my AFCK a bit more. :]

If you do decide to go with a Griptillian, do yourself a favor and get the one in D2 from Cabelas here. In short (because its nearing 3AM) You'll get better edge holding than you will from the 440C.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions guys.

Any other opinions or additional thoughts, please post.

thanks again.
