Defense of a Third Party

The recent thread about the mall shooting and the mention of "big chicken" laws brought this to mind. I realized I have no idea what the laws are in Maryland regarding defense of a third party. I'd hope that I would be allowed to put a stop to such a situation without any worries of legal recourse.

Does anyone have any knowledge in this area?

I don't know Maryland's laws in particular, but the general rule is that reasonable force can be used in defense of self or others. However, I must say its easier to make mistakes about the actual threat when you are not the one involved. E.g., is the person being mugged or being arrested by plainclothes police?

In Utah you are allowed to use the same degree of force to defend someone else that you would use to defend yourself.
