Delica outsell Caly Jr., Why?

It could have something to do with the Delica being in production longer. The Caly Jr has been mostly sprint runs IIRC.

Delica looks cooler to most people, and has always been less expensive. Back when the Caly jr. first came out, you could get it with micarta handles, and that was a bunch more expensive than the Delica in FRN. Then the caly lightweight came out, but there I think the looks came in. In addition, delica/endura have been sort of Spyderco's flagship lightweight knives, and the default purchase for a buyer who doesn't know what to get.

Well, this might be considered heresy by some folks, but I prefer the Delica over the Caly Jr because the handle is more comfortable to me, and I have always hated that sharp peak (cusp) above the thumb-hole.

BTW, I prefer the Salt I over both the Delica and the Caly Jr, because I like the Salt I's blade design and the larger thumb-hole, and the texturing on the spine.

I can't wait to get my hands on the new Delica with dual steel liners and screw construction!

I agree, but it's because I prefer (strongly) tip-up carry

I've never owned a delica (or endura) because I really hate the look of them. It's a real shame, too, because they're great knives and very affordable. I really dig the shape of the calypso and the red handles on the new one. The flat grind and the new steel has had my eye on one for a while now.

I am one of those like the look of Delica. I carried my VG-10 Caly Jr for about 5 years and I like it a lot. I also own a fully serrated (I ordered a plain edged one, but they sent me serrated, never bothered to send it back) Delica in ATS-55. I never carried the Delica because I don’t have much use of a serrated blade. Comparing to the Delica, things I don’t like about the Clay are, first the handle shape, it’s Ok for utility use but grip is awkward for SD purpose; second, tip down carry; third the opening hole is a tad too small; finally, I really don’t like the ridged spine. On the other hand, things I don’t like about the Delica are: the handle is a bit too thin, due to it’s thinner blade stock. I whish a thick stock with full flat ground were used.

A question regarding the new Delica with dual liner, is this the same knife going to have ZDP blade and blue hadle?

Why on earth would you even consider using a CJ or a Delica as a self defense weapon? To say that the CJ is not a good knife because the handle is well suited for self defense type grips (or whatever you are saying) is crazy talk. The Delica is not a self defense knife either so what is your point?

On topic, I just lost my CJ but I have a new Delica that I may use in it's place since I can't seem to trade it. The main thing the Delica has over the CJ is the blade is a tad longer which can be usefull. The CJ is a little stubby but that is the type of knife it is. I think the CJ is one of the best small pocket knives out there. It is not a do everything knife but if all you need is a small blade, it can cut with the best of them. I prefer a little longer blade for EDC but the CJ makes a nice second knife or light duty knife.

It's my opinion that the Calypso Jr is a more evolved knife than the Delica. It fits the hand better (my hand, anyway), the flat-ground blade slices better even though it's from thicker stock, and the pocket clip is much more securely anchored with far less possibility of it torquing out. The only thing that keeps me from carrying mine on any regular basis is that it's tip-down only, and where I work, tip-down knives get gunked up like crazy.

I'll have to get me a ZDP-189 Delica in any case though.

Think there were a number of factors involved. First one being that the Delica was selling well and many dealers were reluctant to take on what they perceived as just another 3" FRN Spyderco. In the brick & mortar world, what's on display is what's going to sell. So it becomes a vicious cycle, low dealer interest keeps sales low, which keeps dealer interest low. Also, the FRN Calypso Jr, because of its extreme light weight, may have been percieved by the average knife buyer as being less sturdy. Finally, the very features that make the Calypso Jr so attractive to some users - the full flat grind and 50/50 choil - do not seem to find the same favor with the average buyer.

I prefer tip up carry and a hollow grind or saber flat grind. The Caly jr. allways scratched up my knuckles when I tried to get something other than my knife out of my RF pocket. Don't get me wrong I loved the black micarta version, though I ended up selling two of the micarta and two FRN Calys for the reasons above.

Cheers,
Rob

I never said Clay is not a good knife. The fact i carried one for five years speaks for itself. What I was trying say is *I* prefer Delica handel *shape* over Caly's, but I like the thickness of Caly's handle. I carry Caly mainly for utility, SD is secondary. Delica can be a good SD knife, there are schools teach people use Delica/Endura exclusive for SD. This is why I am cinsideraing to get a new Delica.
