demascus steel

I am thinking about buying a bowie with a demascus blade. Considering that this will be a big knife and will be used hard, will a demascus steel perform adequately?

Maybe, maybe not. Some Damascus is made for looks. It is usually a mix of carbon steel and nickel forge welded together. Nice looking, not too strong. Other damascus steels are made for performance. They usually use two different carbon steels with different levels of hardness that are forge welded together. This provides a good mixture of edge holding ability and toughness. So the answer isn't black and white. You need to know the composition of the damascus. Take care.

If you have the bread, would suggest you look at ABS Master Smiths, or those journey level folk getting near master status. The youngest MS ever, Josh Smith used damascus for all his MS test knives. They have to be able to bend 90 degrees and return to straight. I'd guess that would be tough enough. Of course, Master Smiths charge, and deserve to, for their expertise.

Good luck,
