Did I get gipped?

Hello. I have been reading the forums for a long time, but I have never posted because I didn't really have anything. After saving my money for a very long time though, the members of the knife internet discussion group I hang out with talked me into buying one.

I am concerned, however - I am not used to high - end stuff like this, I thought $45 for a S&W was an obscene amount of money. I got the MT-L S30V from Triple Aught Design and it looks like this:

As you can see, it appears to have a fracture that was repaired, or maybe a large groove as if from some tool.

On the other side, it looks like this:

The picture does not show it very well, but all down the length, there is a course, criss-cross pattern.

I was thinking that maybe high-end knives are like this, ugly and stuff. But my friend got the same knife, and his looks perfect, on both sides. No grooves, no criss-cross patterns. This is his:

I know you guys make fun of things like Cold Steel, but they are not nearly as expensive and I think things that look like mine are sold as seconds. For Striders, are some of them perfect like my friends, and others just absolutely horrible looking like mine? I kind of feel stupid, spending so much money on a knife so ugly now.

Well see that's sort of why you paid so much for your blade. If there's something wrong with it you can send it back to strider for repairs/replacement.

The strider guys are good guys, i bet my SA they're willing to take care of it for you.

Send it back to them. They have great customer service.

And I bet Mr. Strider himself will have a word about this before this thread hits the bottom.

Trust me, if you've got a strider in your hands, you're in good hands.

Call the shop!!!

Although I kinda remember that the S30V stuff is really hard and tends to be a little rough looking. I might be wrong on that but make sure you call the shop: Phone: (760) 471-8275. They will take care of you.

As for your friends I dont know if it is the same metal or not. It kinda looks like BG-42 cant really tell. Good luck and let us know what happens.

They are both the same one, he ordered it from the same place. They say "bos" with a flame thing and S30V on the handle. I don't know why his is so perfect and mine is like that.

You know, posting pictures like that, and asking if you got gipped, is not exactly the best way to go about this. TAD is a good company. Mick is a gentleman and a man of his word. They both deserve better. In my neck of the woods, those are fighting words. I'm not kidding.

Call the shop or TAD. Talk to a human.

I understand where your coming from, I use to think paying more than $20 bucks for a knife was outrages. This being your first Hi-end knife your expectations on the quality are high, every knife maker (production or custom) will have a bad one every now and then. Call them up and I am sure they will take care of you. I usually wouldn't worry about minor machine marks on a knife like this....gives it character. However something like that on the first pic I would have it look at.

note to self:Put in order for MT-L.

OH, I would take it off your hands, if I had the extra cash. I like the little imperfections, makes you realize they are made by hand, and gives it character. Some people hate the imperfections though, call the shop, and I'm sure they will take care of you.

Be glad you got your MT-L
UPS decided to rip mine off en route from TAD...I'm pi$$ed....
Josh is hooking me up (thanks dude!) but it won't be S30V-no big deal I guess, ATS-34 has worked great for so long, I doubt I'll be able to tell the difference....
So if anyone see's a UPS person with a black MT-L on his belt...deck him!
cosmetic blemish or no, that's an awesome tool you got there. you did not get gipped at all!

cheers,
Derek

Notsubby,

I can well understand your concern; I would have problems with a crack like that too (unless self-inflicted:D ). As for the scratchy pattern, I know little about knife-making but I would expect that is something that can be remedied with a refinish or just a slight polish.
I assume you will be taking Mr. Strider up on his kind offer and send it in; please keep us informed, for I am curious about the result, although judging from the overall praise concerning Strider's customer care, I too suspect you will be quite happy yet.

Christiaan.

We received your knife today in the mail.
The marks are left over from the blade being surface ground. For some reason they were not removed prior to the finishing of your blade. Sorry about that.
I removed them and your blade is being re-handled at this time.
The mark on the FWP side was left by the stamp sliding off the blade after the stamp.
NOT A CRACK!

We need a little more return postage info though. Please contact the office at:

Thanks

FWP side is the Flying War Penis side right?

Seriously this is an example of why it is the best deal to own a STRIDER!

Thank you, I appreciate it a lot -- I did not mean to sound like I was attacking your company or anything, I was just concerned after spending so much money.

My friend, the rich guy bought another Strider after he got his MT-L and liked it so much, he got the WB and it looks perfect as well. Maybe when I get some money I will buy one too.

it's fantastic to deal with a company such as strider who A) makes such a great product and B) stands behind that product no matter what.
that's pretty rare these days it seems...

cheers,
Derek
