Different Strokes...or how to swing a khukuri

many ways but like pappy says safe is best.;)
i always try to take cuts swingin away from me so if the cut carries on through i dont lose a part of my anatomy.:D
i am left handed, so use mostly downward cut from right to left,
and if i use right hand, left to right. any cutting straight on, i put a heavy stump under target so as to act as brake for khuk blade.

if you are talkin combat, any where you can get your opponnent would be fine,as it will make a big mess no matter where you strike.
but neck, head, shoulder, arm, thigh, leg upswing to groin.all would be most effective.
i am not into combat but, if the occassion arose, the idea is to do the most damage in the shortest time.:( :(

OH NO!! He's returned!!Between Paxton & Koz ,I'm doomed! You new guys don't realize it yet but K's will be in short supply!!NOBODY beats KOZ on the keyboard!!

Khuk swingin'

Focus on accuracy and power will follow, focus on form and speed will follow. An important concern when wielding any large blade, is to be aware of your surroundings and things that could catch/deflect your blade into a path not of your choosing.

Very well said. The last bit about a path not of your choosing is an important one too. I have had more than my share of CLOSE calls with my shins/knees when the blade either deflected, or cut through my target with unexpected ease, leaving way to much energy remaining in the swing:eek: Its always one of those "pale faced, cold sweat, I think I'll sit down for a second" kind of moments:D

this thread cracks me up...

Just last night, I was playing with my YCS...drawing and sheathing it. I drew it out and caught one of the kardas with my finger launching it into the air... ***time suddenly slowing down*** ...I watched as this beautifully designed and crafted karda came out and started floating, twisting and sparkling in the light - a truly magnificent...OUCH!! #@$%@$#%...

Stuck right in my left foot...yikes!

Fortunately it bounced instead of sticking and only left me with a puncture wound...whew!

It was hilarious, though. Here I was admiring the beauty when it suddenly jumped out and kicked me in the pants...

hmmmmm...the subject of admiring beauty reminds me of a little family outing to the fair a few weeks ago. ;) :D

We were watching a pack of tigers in a big cage (ring) - they were getting ready for dinner. One of them sprayed the exit of the ring - probably to say "me first". Then another one sprayed on the other side of the exit as if to say "me next". One by one, the huge cats took turns spraying on down the line. We were standing at about 2 o'clock relative to the entrance and the sprays were getting closer and closer. We started to back away from the ring realizing that we could be next!

Well, some mullet-clad fella comes up to the fence to have a gander at the big "pussy-cats" and...SQUIRT!!...one of the big cats just let him have it...top to bottom...he was covered and marked for dinner... LOL!!

He took off with his hands in the air cussing and laughing at the same time...

When I swing bigger khukuris, I'm caring my wrist and elbow are not stretched out. And I also take care my elbow not to go out of chest line. Such tight swinging form is not spoil khukuri versatility as it is forward curved.

My kenjutsu sensei once told a sword should be swung around its weight center, not wrist. This does not apply every use of khukuri, but serves me as a good advise when practicing MA moves.

Well, look what the cat dragged in! Where you been, Harry? We've missed you -- especially the Caveman.

I have heard others here give this kind of advice. "Be careful, be observant and let the khuk teach you." I do this as each of my khuks handles differently. It works for me, just don't go too fast or you can end up with those situations like Mauirob is talking about. I had a 19" AK deflect on me once, I was getting the feel for it splitting some firewood. It flew out of my hand and sailed into the bushes, right past my leg. I don't doubt that if it connected then I may have been a spontaneous amputee. It was a very sobering lesson.

Thanks Dan, that made my day:D
