I've done a bit of reseach on this topic so I'll offer some pointers based upon my reading and research.
the Canon line is very popular for a reason. they take great photos. not to take away from other brands but if you are looking for a safe choice with more bells and whistles than you are likely to use, look at Canon.
I agree with the previous poster regarding the A Powershot series. while some want the smallest camera they can find, there are trade offs. I like the flexibility of using two AA batteries or AA rechargeables because no matter where I am I can find replacement batteries if mine peter out. other cameras use a proprietary battery that are expensive to replace or to purchase a second as back up. don't discount the benefit of a camera that uses a standard, readily avaiable battery.
in my opinion, you will not go wrong with the A590 or it's predecessor, the A570 if you can find it. excellent cameras that have more features than you are likely to need. despite using two AA batteries, these cameras are small enough to fit in a shirt pocket so don't get the impression that AA means a clunker.
a word of caution. people get lulled into cameras with the highest mega pixel rating. be careful here. this is a perfect example of more is not always better. read the reviews on Amazon. some of the higher mega pixel cameras take crappy photos. this happens because trying to cram more mega pixels onto a small photosensor chip (small cameras mean small chips) creates noise in the image. a good 5-7 megapixel camera is more than enough for home display of your photos and of course posting to the internet.
I own both the Powershot A570 and A590 because they both take excellent photos, use readily available batteries, are compact enough for my needs and the offered features are more than I need.
