digital photo resolution question

Good photos really make a post enjoyable. I love posting photos but hate the hassle of messing around to get them ready to post.

I always keep my camera set to max resolution. After downloading the photos to my PC, I have to run any photo I want to post through my photo editing program to reduce the resolution/file size. My digital SLR will take a "basic" resolution .jpg and RAW file simultaneously, but I find I still have to edit the .jpg to get it to posting size.

Is editing what most of you do, or do you purposely shoot at the lowest resolution your camera offers and post without editing?

I always worry that if I set the camera to the lowest resolution, I'll end up with a photo that I want to enlarge or print and will be SOL. (Or I'll forget to change it back when shooting something important and end up with the same problem).

What do you find to be the most convenient way to deal with posting your photos?

Thanks for any insights and advice,
desmobob

I shoot at 10 MP, 3680 x 2800 size, then edit in KDE SHOWFOTO (linux based). I resize down to 1800 x 1200, (otherwise it takes way to long to render while editing) check the contrast/hue etc, sharpen and refocus, then save a copy. I then upload to Photobucket which resizes to web page sizes (640 x 50 or 800 x 600)

it takes a few minutes per photo, but i like the outcomes.

Hi desmobob, I shoot max res and have an export action in Adobe Lightroom for the web. Very easy. I adjust contrast and sharpening per image then export. Cost me no more then 2 minutes per image. In the export is the size and location for saving. In Photoshop you can also make such an action. Hope it helps.

You are right on shooting at max resolution. I ALWAYS do it, no matter what I'm shooting. What happens when you get that once in a lifetime shot that you didn't even mean to get and you are at a low resolution?

Most consumer grade programs will let you do bulk resizes. I use ACDSEE and MS Picture Manager and both let you select as many pics as you want and resize to your specs all at once. There is actually a plugin that you can get for Windows where you can do it in Explorer, but the quality of resizes is not that great.

I shoot everything in the highest resolution. If I want to post a photo on the forums I upload it to photobucket, there it will give you a choice to upload them at different sizes. So I choose a much smaller size to upload then post that picture.

I know there is a way on windows xp to do it, but if you are running vista by chance just right click the photo, select "send to", then "mail recipient". It will ask you what size you want the picture, select a size and it will shrink them down into an blank email attachment. Drag the photo or photos out of the attatchment area in the blank email onto your desktop. Very simple way to resize an image w/o editing programs.

Agree'd. Photobucket makes resizing very easy.

However, if you want a powerful and free(honest to goodness free, not "internet free") I'd suggest checking out GIMP. Its like Adobe Photoshop but open source. I haven't used it in a while, but I think you can automate a lot of stuff like resizing photos like you can with Photoshop.

whats the diff between jpg and RAW? i'm guessing my Fuji Finepix S2000HiDef 10MP does'nt have RAW?

I guess I've been doing it like most others. I shoot in hi-res, then use my editing program (Nikon Capture Editor) to tune up and re-size, then I either put them up on my own web space provided by my ISP or, more recently, put them up on photobucket.

That leads to my next question... when I'm posting on Bladeforums, I use the "Insert Image" button to put a photo in my message. Then I cut and paste the "HTML Code" line from photobucket into Bladeforum's "Insert Image" text box. This puts the full-size image from my photobucket album into my Bladeforums post.

The other option I understand is using photobucket's "HTML Thumb" line and inserting that text into the Bladeforums "Insert Image" text box to get a clickable thumbnail image in the post.

A couple of you mentioned the ease of resizing uploaded photos using photobucket; C. Bryant said,
"...I upload it to photobucket, there it will give you a choice to upload them at different sizes.

I'm not seeing that choice when I use photobucket. Where should I look?

Thanks again,

In the "Upload Images and Video" Box, below the "Choose Files" Box, there is a drop-down menu that says "Reduce to:" which provides various pre-set sizes from which you can choose. Remember to check it before uploading images because it stays on the last used setting I think.

A RAW image file is basically unprocessed information straight from the sensor of your camera... the "raw materials" necessary to produce an image. The file is kept unaltered so no matter how much editing you do, you can always go back to the original information and start over. The alterations are kept in a file attached to the original RAW data, instead of actually changing the file, which is what happens when you edit a .jpg.

Thanks, buddy! I was looking in the "share" menu with the individual photos.

It couldn't have been much plainer! (as some of the local old timers would say, "If it was a bear, it would have bit ya!")

Thanks again for all the help; I appreciate it,

I guess I'm the odd man out as I normally shoot at medium resolution. I've never printed a picture in my life and since the only place they end up is on the web I figure that's good enough for what I'm doing.

You can bypass the "Insert Image" process if you copy the one marked "IMG Code". Just paste that directly into the text of your post.

I do about the same as everybody else but I use flickr.I started putting pictures on Yahoo, then they bought flickr, but when ATT got Yahoo, they quit supporting flickr,so I got a pro account from them. They give you the option of 3 or 4 sizes of pictures when you link them.
