Disabling speed-safe?

I dig the leek and chive, but I am worried about the legality of the speed-safe system. Would it be hard to modify one of these so as to disable speed-safe, without completely screwing up the action?

thanks,

My neighbor has a broken Chive and it works just fine as a manual opener.

If you disassemble it and it doesn't work to your likeing you can always put it back to original condition.

not particularly difficult
you just need a small torx screwdriver
the torsion bar is easy to remove
just try to document what you're doing so you can remember how to put it back next time

It depends on where you live. You see, you apply manual force to the blade to open it about 5 - 10 % before the torsion bar kicks in, they are completely legal in all of North America, Europe, most of Asia. Australia is the only country to my knowledge that has actually made them illegal because the definition of a switchblade means centrifugal applied through the handle to the blade, not directly to the blade.

It's only because of ignorant LEO's, if you look at the law in depth, speed-safes are legal. And I remember the thing about WI. the definition of a switchblade is different there.

Hope this helps for a look at the inside of a speedsafe.

Thanks guys, I decided on a Spyderco MeerKat instead... although my next knife will probably be a Kershaw Leek.

While they may technically be legal, that doesn't mean some LEO won't confiscate it or even arrest me. I'd rather skip the lost knife and/or lawyer bills ;)

Massachusetts, especially Boston tends to be really over-anal about this sort of stuff.

thanks,
