Disappointed with Becker BK-7 C/U sheath

Just got my new BK-7. Beauty knife - pity about the sheath. I really wasn't holding my breath expecting much of the sheath - and I got what I expected. The kydex liner is WAY too loose to hold the blade securely. Any edge on the blade would soon be gone as the knife bounces and clunks around inside the kydex.

Why wouldn't Becker make the kydex more form-fitting to the blade?

I would really like the sheath, if it fit the blade better.

Normark, where are you?

Hi Shane,

Because Will F. didn't need some new Firesteels right now, I haven't yet aquired the BK-7/U so I haven't been able to test the sheath myself, however look at it from the bright side, be positive, stick a diamond hone in the provided pouch then you'll have an razor edge on the BK-7C/U always within a minute ;)

If want to trade the BK-7C/U because of the sheath, we have a new bunch of Glowrings coming in soon and I'm willing to trade your knife for a bunch of them lose kydex liner or not, I (we) don't care :D .

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Bagheera, thanks for your generous offer, but I LOVE the knife - it's a keeper. It's just the sheath that is causing me a bit of grief right now. :)

I don't know if it was the intent of Camillus or not but personally I do not like a form fitting Kydex sheath.

The problem with most of them is that they make too much contact with the blade and while they look and feel good at the shows, in the field they trap contaminents right against the blade, water, dirt, sand, etc. , which abrade the blade finish.

If you get your blade wet, then it gets covered in sand, like a "sugar cookie", it is not really a pleasant sound when even so much as one grain of sand is in the sheath ot blade.

The are some good Kydex sheaths out there that will securely hold a blade and not allow contact along the side but they are few and far between.

If you're talking about the tritium glowrings then I just got some from Phil at 2thehilt.com. He has them on his site in an arc light combo but if you ask him he sells them separately.

Back on topic: I agree with XRAYED, if anything gets into a tight fitting kydex sheath, it'll scratch up your knife (most of the time). So it's probably better to have it loose. I actually like my BK-7 sheath, but I had a kydex one made anyway because I don't wear a belt so I needed something a little different.

Thanks for the info guys, but am I overly concerned about nothing? The idea of my freshly sharpened blade banging about inside the sheath can't be a good thing for edge retention - can it???

Plus, it's NOISY as hell when I walk with the blade strapped to my leg.

That Kydex insert shouldn't hurt the edge, and the sheath wouldn't be ambidextrous if the insert was form fitted. Other than the fact that the strap isn't ambidextrous, I've got no complaints about the sheath on mine.
You can always heat it up with a hair dryer, and press fit it to the blade.
Mine doesn't rattle around much, thankfully, and I haven't needed to fool with it.
Good luck with your sheath.

...and Piet, I want some glowrings, too:)

Ambidextrous strap???
How can a strap be ambidextrous or not? I can undo the snap with either hand no matter what side I wear the knife on.

The sheath that comes with this knife is perfectly seviceable. Note you only paid $50.00 for both knife and sheath. I am not sure you could even have a nice leather or kydex sheath for that kind of money let alone a knife like the BK7. I am very happy with both knife and sheath for the money spent. No one - period - offers a nicer set up for $50.00.

By being reversible, so that it can be worn with the snap opening to either the front or rear. Both of my Busse sheaths, which are of similar construction have this option.

1)As it stands, The Bbecker sheath allows you to put the blade in either edge-forward or edge to the rear because it is NOT fitted to the blade. It also allows a left handed user the same "usability" as as a righty.

2)Kydex will not damage the edge in any way.

3)If it really bugs you you can heat the kydex and "fit" it to the blade. Then you risk damaging the sheath and the glue that holds the liner in.

What do you think of the knife?

shane,
You should post this over at the Camillus forum so Will can add his 2 cents.

Good collecting !

The knife is fabulous - especially at this price point. I have absolutely no complaints about it. The balance is just about right for me.

I don't want to sound like I'm whining about a $50.00 knife/sheath combo - like averageguy said, it's one hell of a deal - and I agree 110%.

I just don't like the idea of a sheath that allows me to actually FEEL the knife moving around when I walk even when the sheath is securely strapped to my leg, as well as the NOISE of the blade banging around inside the kydex.

Mine isn't tight, however there is no rattle. If the blade is actually banging around as you walk, and the edge is constantly hitting the kydex then yes the edge will suffer. I don't think this is the expected behavior.
