Discolored edge.....heat treat gone?

I bought an inexpensive 5 3/4" Mora to beat on and hone my sharpening skills.

I messed up the tip pretty bad by trying to put an edge on the backside of it. It looked like I needed to remove a fair amount of metal, so instead of using the stone I have, I used my angle grinder.

I forgot about not letting it get too hot.

The tip glowed orange. Woops. Now it's discolored. Did I screw up the heat treating? Can I fix it?

Yes. I doubt it. Every time I got my tip blue on a belt sander, the next pass on the sander it went BLING! and was gone. At least it's a cheap knife, good thinking on your part!

I managed to get the discoloration off with my stone.

Still can't get it as sharp as my other Moras that still are factory sharp. Guess I gotta get a Sharpmaker, or at least a better stone.

The area that was discolored should be carefully removed- not just the discoloration, the steel. Carefully remove it without discoloring it again.

Whoa! Getting oxidation colors, getting steel hot enough to oxidize blue, affects the heat treatment of the oxidized portion. But you got the tip so hot it glowed orange -- that is a great deal hotter. It wasn't just the very edge that got too hot. I'm afraid you're going to have to relegate that blade to scraping paint and things like that, and buy another one to use as a knife. Fortunately they're cheap.
