Disposable razors

Just a few rambling thoughts.

I usually use disposable twin blades, such as the Schick Slim Twin. I have a heavy Italian beard, and can only muster about 3-5 shaves from each razor. 5 is REALLY pushing it.

I tried a Bic 3 blade razor from Sam's club. The price was right, but I cut myself so much I am giving away about 20 of them to my bro-in-law.

I was sent one of those new 5 blade jobbies (Gillette Fusion?)...it shaved VERY well. Extremely close, with few nicks. It also lasted through about 10 or so shaves. Mighty impressive.

I considered using the Fusion...but, they are $38 for 16 blades ($2.37 each). My recent twin blade is the Gillette Custom Plus ($19.34 for 52 razors, or 37 cents/razor).

The Fusion blade is 6.4 times the cost of the Custom. I can use the Custom 3-5 times, so the Fusion would need to last for 19 - 32 shaves!

But...that Fusion really does provide a nice shave!

The Fusion costs more to keep fed, but it is well worth it in my opinion! I love the Gilette Fusion. I've never even come close to cutting or nicking myself with it, and it shaves closer than any other razor of its kind. (I've never dared use a straight razor--yet). But anyway, what's $1 a shave? And the cost is less than that in my experience.

If you have so much bobtosterone coursing through your veins that you only get 5 shaves out of a disposable razor, maybe you should get a straight razor.

Of course, you would probably wear out one of those too. :D

Don't forget about lasers:D If you have a set facial hair style, you can do the whole laser hair removal and then tatoo on your goatee, side burns etc. I've seen girls do it with their eyebrows like the nurse at my local blood donor clinic.

DE razors aren't for everybody I suppose... but my Derby blades come out to 15¢ apiece, and I get a week's worth of shaves from each one.

I feel your pain, I too have coarse and thick facial hair, I recently switched from a 2 blade to gillettes 3 blade and it is a much smoother shave.
I get 1-2 shaves from a twin and about 3 shaves from a triple. I wear a beard from dec to march and am happy to get a week out of the triple just shaving my neck.
I have thought seriously about using a straight razor, maybe its time.
Thanks,
Del

Pedalinbob,
I figured my above comment wasn't to constructive, so I figured I'd try to be helpful. You might want to try a double edge, perhaps a Gillette super speed red tip as these were made for people with tough beards and can be found used on e-bay at reasonable prices even better prices can be had at shaving specific forums if you look. Or perhaps a Merkur open comb also designed for tough beards. With maintenance either one should last a lifetime or two. Now on to the good part, you can ditch those gillette disposable and use blades that cost about $10-12 for 100 blades and provide generally 3-4 days shaving per blade. Even if your dumping the blade after two shaves you'd still be realizing a savings in the long run(If my math is correct that is). Pic is of Merkur open comb.

i like the IIRC gillette fusion with the battery that vibrates, it works really well i have been using them for 3 yrs or so now with no complaints.

my girlfriend likes it too, especially the vibration, but thats probably not a story for here lol.

Get a DE and use Derby blades. You will never touch one of those "disposables" again.

My favorite is the Merkur 34C.

Wow, I forgot about this thread.

Thanks for the info, folks.

I dislike the wastefulness of the disposable razor, yet have not been able to explore other types, such as the one shown above (used to be known as the "safety razor"). I tried a similar razor about 20 years ago (old friend of mine had one), and it did shave well but I cut the heck outta myself!
Guess my techniqe was a bit...lacking.

I have a beard and only shave my cheeks and my neck. Right now I'm using Bic single blade's and get a couple of months out of each one. But of late I've been thinking about giving a straight razor a try mostly to reduce what I throw away. So who makes good quality straight razors.

Bors,
Dovo and a few others still produce straight razors but there are a whole bunch of vintage ones to be foung out there and a plus on these is they often come honed, in addition to a cost savings.
