do the kamis enjoy their work?

I always admire these blades and handles and all the rest and marvel at the workmanship. And I wonder if they enjoy making these fine khuks.

What do you think?

I imagine that they take a certain pride in their work. Consider though that they begin training as small children and do the same work over and over until they die. They probably get bored and burnt out after years of the same thing. I wonder what they could do with that piece of Mercedes spring if they saw photos of some of our best custom knives and were given free reign and materials to make copies or to create new designs.

They obviously are incredibly good at what they do. But I must admit that, from the pictures, I don't believe "enjoy" would be the proper word. Perhaps, as Green Ice said, pride would describe it better.

I think much of the time they enjoy their work. I don't think you can make what they do without this. See how Bura refused to quit after his stroke? (Though granted it is all he knows. When he was recovering, he carved a wooden figurine which was sold here! )

Years ago, I meet an old gent who worked at Gerber. That was factory work -- zero creativity but high standards (then). He said he "loved" his job. That summer, I drove him to work a couple of times when his truck was in the shop, and he wanted to be sure to be there a little early. He never seemed to have the "Sunday Afternoon Blues" that aflict some as the thoughts of Monday come crowding in.

What the kamis do is much more creative and, therefore, has the potential to be satisfying. The specials have been producing items not in the normal product line, and some are spectacularly lovely, IMO.

One can hope.
