Do you use your EDC at Restaurant's?

I was out eating breakfast today at Rickey's and was eating some bacon, which was annoying me beacuse it was to hard to cut into bite size pieces with the dull butter knife that i was provided with, so i was thinking of options, I could pull out my pocket stone and put a decent edge on it, or I could pull out my M16 and slice it like a hot knife through butter. After some thought i decided that my M16 was the better option and proceeded to finish breakfast with my M16 in hand. I was just wondering how many of you use your knives in restaurant's.

Carried an Opinel No. 8 for ten years, and used it every time the resturaunt 'forgot' to give me a descent knife; either that or the 'steak knife' they gave me was too dull to use six years ago. Nowadays, they tend to avoid my table after I pull out a 5" Talonite linerlock with ivoury scales :D

It was kinda funny, when the waitress came to ask if i wanted a re-fill and she saw my knife she paused for like 4 seconds, while she was saying re-fill, it came out like "Would you like a Re-...........................Fill sir?" Its funny how people that work around and HAND OUT knives to people all day can be taken aback by a simple 3" folder.

I just used my new CS Voyager Extra-Large (5") clippoint to prepare dinner. I wonder how that would go over at my local steakhouse ??? :D

My wife is resigned to the fact that when dining at a restaurant I will be using my own knife when nessasary. I make sure I'm carrying something presentable with me :)

Not ususally, but we went to Taco Bell tonight, and they only made a pass at my steak quesedilla. So, out with the CS Voyager....
Nobody noticed, that I could tell.

I feed my Mini-Talon an AppleBees steak every week. :D Talonite needs a regular diet of red meat.

A couple of weeks ago..... I had finished my rather grizzled Applebees steak and the waitress came to take away our plates. She almost made off with the Mini-Talon!!!!

Oh, absolutely. I'll use my carry knife if necessary to avoid fighting with some tough edible.

When I go out to a nice restaurant with the wife, I usually try to carry something two things:
1. something innocuous like a small Sebbie (which is fine for steaks and such really, a bit small)
2. whatever defensive piece I have chosen to carry (which stays in pocket or where ever concealed, since it is normally 3.5" to 4" blade and non-sheeple friendly, like a Mach 1, 710, AFCK, or Nealy Pesh Kabz.)

I recall the wide-eyed look on my business colleague's face a couple years ago when I whipped out my black AFCK 800 on a domestic flight to open something (peanuts probably). That 4" blade sure looked huge to him when it unfolded. The good old days... heh heh heh. (need an "old man" emoticon).

:geezer:

I've yet to use one of my knives on my food (though i've considered it a few times), but i've had occaison to use my knife to open a particularly stubborn ketchup packet or straw wrapper...
There's nothing quite like seeing the look on people's faces when you use your Spyderco Chinook to open a salt packet for your mom! :)

Sure have, I hate wrestling with my food, especially if I have paid someone else to put it on my plate. I like the Opinel idea, as plates are pretty hard on edges, that thin blade touches up quickly.
Some years back, at a favorite steakhouse, I mentioned to the owner how dull his knives had become and the preception it gave that the steaks were not as tender as they should be. I guess he took it to heart as they had new knives the next time I was there.
Regards, Greg

Absolutely. My TNT sees regular duty when we dine out.

Why settle for what the restuarant tries to pass off as cutlery when you have the best tool at hand?

Hey, James, nice letter to BLADE this month. I'm reading through them, and I see this one. Read through it, and think, "Cool. That's good information." Or whatever. Anyway, I look at the signature, and see your name. I think, "Cool, I know this guy." Well, sorta, eh?

Anyway, back to the topic. I never use my personal knife at a restaurant, at least not to cut my food. I can't bear to think of what the ceramic will do to the edge. I'd rather wear it in two with the provided silverware.

Thanks, I have not received my copy of this months issue so didn't know I had a letter published. And you must know me by now ;)

I wouldn't think twice about using my knife if necessary. That said, I have never had to. I get my steaks med-rare and if they are not right I send them back. Pretty much any decent steak knife will take care of a well cooked steak. As far as bacon, tacos and the sort go, that is to be eaten with your hands.

Now taking out a knife in a restaurant is a different story. When I came home from school my parents took me to eat at the country club. While at diner I preceded to remove my BM 910HS open it and hand it to my dad to examine. He was duly impressed and proceded to examine it at the table. No one that I noticed in the restaurant gave it a second look. Could have something to do with the fact that most of the patrons are middle aged or older with a decidedly conservative bent. I also took it out the next night at a local bar and grill type place to show a family friend. No funny looks there that I saw but again the guy thought it was great.

As far as my other blades (MOD Ladyhawk and Spydie Matriarch), they would stay in my pocket. No real reason to have them out at a restaurant. I would take the MOD out to show someone, but the Matriarch would stay in my pocket unless absolutely necessary.

I often use personal knives in resturants. If the issue tools can't get it done, then I am reminded of why I carry a knife.

Sure, I've used my Buck 301, 112, and my Old Timer 8-OT quite often at restraunts. Yeah, the wife hates it when I do that. Wives just don't understand how awful it is to use inferior cutlery.:D

Buzz, you should strap your talon to your wrist or something so a savvy waiter or waitress doesn't "accidently" walk off with it.

Honest-to-God...I have flipped-open my monster REKAT Sifu  to cut my steak with, (while dining in nice resturants), and I'll contine to do so, as long as I'm provided with a steak-knife that won't even cut warm butter.:D.

BTW, I think that after 19 years together, my wife is finally getting used to "my ways", as she no-longer rolls her eyes when I do that...LOL!!.:).

Of course I flip open my Benchmade Axis lock when the supplied "knife" won't handle the task. My fiance has my mini-axis lock in her purse and she has been known to open it a time or two herself. What I find funny about that is she was anti gun and anti knife untill she met me. I have her converted on one topic and accepting on the other, but she's young and learning. Her family sometimes still give me weird looks, but they can't deny I have helped them out a few times because I had a knife or gun around.
