Does anyone buy a knife for a collection and leave it in the packaging?

Hey all, so as some of you know I have started collecting a little lol. Well my orange skyline came in the clam shell and I took it out without even thinking for the collection but I have a couple of fixed blades coming that I wouldn't be surprised if they came in the same type of packaging. I bought these two knives purely for the collection and I don't ever see myself carrying them, I do use most of my knives but don't really carry fixed blades. So I am actually strongly considering keeping these in the packaging and for pictures maybe have them standing up in the background lol. Do any other collectors here ever leave some of their knives in the original packaging?

I have most of mine stored in the original boxes with the original knife oil and dessicant pack when possible. The Blurs and Skylines that came in clampacks I took out and I have in Kershaw or ZT knife bags because the clam shell packaging takes up a lot of room. I've got my knives stored in a half dozen Rubbermade type containers with jars of kitty litter crystals. Oregon is quite humid and I've had some little spots on a bead blast Storm II that sat on my nightstand for a few weeks while I carried other knives.

I've got plastic lids with the center cut out and a thick tyvek type disc in the center that lets air through. They are designed for air flow while letting mycelia colonize your substrate and to reseal themselves after you puncture them with a needle to push a syringe full of spores in to it. You can also use multiple layers of coffee filter. A single filter is too thin and will get punctured easily. Just put a stack of filters of the jar, screw down, trim excess paper away.

Those things absorb the moisture and I can buy a bag of kitty litter crystals for next to nothing versus the same stuff labeled as a dessicant. You can get the plastic lids and the filter discs from places that sell supplies for mushroom growing. You can heat the stuff in an oven to reactivate it but I just throw it out since it's dirt cheap as kitty litter crystals.

^Yeah, what he said, but substitute Oregon for NYC. :D I got two of those orange Skylines. One is still in the clamshell. Of the now 30+ Kershaws and ZTs I own, I only regularly use about 4 of them; the Skyline, Packrat, Cryo, ZT0780 and sometimes the ZT0550. The rest are safe queens. Well, storage case queens.

Thanks a lot for the rust prevention techniques, that is always a concern. It is actually the main reason im thinking about leaving these fixed blades in the packaging. My folders i will flip and play with lol but I think I can live with keeping these two in the packaging to keep them in that condition.

I keep my folders in knife cases I got off budk and amazon.with a few packs of the silica in each.I have all the boxes they came in stored in a cardboard box.I live in Wa state and haven't had any issues with corrosion or rust.Even kept a few fixed blades in sheaths for years and still like new

I keep all of the boxes in Rubbermaid containers and store the knives in my large Spyderpacs. All of my knives earn their keep - I have a few that I reserve for "hard use," but I move all of them into my EDC rotation. That may change as I move into more expensive collecting, but I just can't let a tool go unused. I'm in Colorado, so humidity isn't a problem. i haven't ever seen a single rust spot on any of my knives; no oiling or dessicants needed.

Nope have to take them all out and use them, unless I got something in trade and know I will never use it, it gets traded back off.

Yeah I just researched a little further with the help of google lol. Apparently if you leave knives in clam packaging for too long they can still corrode and rust, so I guess it is actually in the knives' best interest to be taken in out and looked at. Maybe even set up for some decent picks with the collection someday :)

If you dont plan to use your knives for a while, use remoil wipes at least once a month for all your blades and wax them once every six months. That should maintain their longevity and prevent rust. As for me I keep ALL my knives in their packaging, I take a diiferent knife everyday out of its packaging for my rotation. If its the weekend I go with my gentleman folders.

I make sure I don't buy knives in clamshell packaging coz I love my boxes :D....but if I really really love a certain knife..like the kershaw OD-2 CKT, then I'll take the clamshell packaging regardless.

I have some speedsafes but i ordered 2 fixed blades that i know will never see use.

neither did I, great advice in this thread guys thanks again for everyone's input

People do.

I don't.

To each their own.

I posted on another thread, I bought 6 Kershaw Boas in S30V brand new in the boxes for $60 because the owner thought they were messed up from storage. All the torsion bars were "U's" from being stored closed.

just remove the torsion bars and use the knives, they work much better manually in my opinion or just call up Kershaw, they'll send free torsion bars your way

Thanks for the advice, what kind of wax do you recommend?

Flitz rifle, knife and gun wax. Protects from everything including fingerprints, that stuff is just magical :D. Just make sure you dont use it on black or bead blasted blades because I think they ruin the finish. I'm not sure if it does I just followed advice from many knife nuts and have never used it on any of my blades that had a finish on them. Although I saw a YT video of a guy using it on his Skyline with no problems
