If you can get a extra base for the Sharpmaker? I would like to be able to leave one set up with each grit of stone. I may also want to modify one for the Congress stones if they don't fit quite right. Thanks

Just do what I did and buy another sharpmaker :D. I think you might have to call Spyderco and ask them.

I asked the same thing a while back. The only way to get another base is to buy another whole system.

Sorry. :(

Thanks guys. I might try to make a base but I guess it wouldn't hurt to have spare stones as well.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I was wondering which Congress stones you got, and how they work. Do they fit in the base well?

Thanks

You could drill holes in a block to fit the stones--it'd only support the stones on the edges but if you get the size right that might be secure enough. That way you could set up other angles if desired, and if it just doesn't work you've wasted nothing more than a 2x4 and can just buy another sharpmaker.

Most people go with the half inch Ruby triangles. I've also heard of people using the Flex or Moldmaster. I bought some Ruby stones for Sharpmaker a while back. I didn't really like them. They fit into my Sharpmaker easily, but the angles weren't the same for both sides. I could have just had a bad batch though. Many people have used them successfully. I just couldn't deal with getting the angles right every time I wanted to use them. I just prefer to clip Wet/Dry sandpaper onto my Sharpmaker stones.

I have not got mine yet. I got a letter that said they have been shipped.

I'm anxious to hear how they work. And I'm doubly anxious for you to talk to your machinist friend about my special project.
